The Covid.gov website, which previously focused on promoting information about vaccines and testing, now features an image of President Donald Trump and criticizes pandemic prevention and control policies implemented under former President Joe Biden.

At the top of the page is a large image of President Trump walking amid the words “Lab Leak” in capital letters. A smaller caption near the president’s feet reads “The Real Origin of Covid-19.”

The site also took aim at Mr Biden’s former chief medical adviser, Anthony Fauci, for pushing what it called “the preferred narrative that Covid-19 originated naturally”.

The website lays out five key points to support the lab leak theory, noting that Wuhan – where the first case of SARS-CoV-2 was detected – is also home to China’s “top SARS research laboratory” and has a history of conducting research at “inadequate biosafety levels.”

The lab leak theory, once considered a conspiracy theory, has recently gained traction in the United States.

Even as the debate rages on, both scientifically and politically , US agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Energy have voiced support for the theory, albeit with varying degrees of confidence.

In January, the CIA said its analysts believed the virus was more likely to have emerged from a laboratory than from a live animal market in Wuhan. However, the World Health Organization said “all hypotheses remain open.”
