Fat-dissolving injection at spa, girl hospitalized due to complications

Believing her friend, Ms. NTH (35 years old) went to a spa near her place to get fat-dissolving injections in her abdomen. However, before she could see any improvement, she had to go to the hospital due to complications.

On October 31, Master, Doctor Nguyen Minh Nghia - in charge of the cosmetic surgery department, Hoe Nhai General Hospital (Hanoi), informed that the hospital had just successfully performed surgery on a female patient who had a fat-dissolving injection at a spa and suffered from serious abdominal complications.

The patient is Ms. NTH (35 years old, Tuyen Quang) admitted to the hospital with a fat belly and many old scars.

Taking a medical history, the female patient said she was 1m55 tall and weighed about 75kg. After giving birth, Ms. H. experienced uncontrolled weight gain, gaining nearly 20kg within 1 year.

In recent years, Ms. H. has researched and followed an advertised weight loss regimen, spending hundreds of millions each year, but this diet only helps Ms. H. maintain her weight and does not help her lose any weight.

Two years ago, Ms. H. heard from a friend that there was a non-invasive weight loss method. With just one injection, the fat would automatically liquefy and her belly would shrink.

Believing her friend, Ms. H. went to a spa near her place of residence and injected an unknown solution into her lower abdomen. The liquefied fat was nowhere to be seen, but a week after the injection, Ms. H.'s abdomen had many red, swollen, and hard spots.

When reporting this situation to the spa owner, he was instructed to go to the pharmacy to buy antibiotics, but the situation did not improve.

"When returning to the spa, the patient was referred to another clinic for injections and incisions to drain the pus, but the pus pockets appeared more densely, swollen, and painful," Dr. Nghia shared the patient's condition.

Ms. H. continued to return to the cosmetic facility but the facility was closed and could not be contacted. Near the end of October 2024, the woman went to the cosmetic surgery department of Hoe Nhai General Hospital for examination.

Here, after examination, Dr. Nghia diagnosed the patient with an abdominal abscess after fat-dissolving injection. The sequelae left behind were a concave and convex abdomen and a hardened lower abdomen.

"The female patient was treated at another medical facility for 6 months, and had the abscess healed, but it left many ugly scars.

After examination, the doctors performed a combination of liposuction, abdominal shaping, cutting all the fat and skin of the lower abdomen, cutting all the old fibrous scars in the abdominal area, and then tightening the abdominal skin.

After surgery, the patient's health was stable and he was discharged from the hospital for outpatient care," said Dr. Nghia.

According to Dr. Nghia, with the increasing demand for beauty and weight loss among women, many spas advertise rapid beauty treatments, even advertising fat-dissolving injections, which will eliminate fat through urine. When going to the toilet, a layer of fat will appear on the surface.

However, the doctor said that if fat appears in the stool, the person's kidneys are in severe kidney failure.

"The doctor's advice is that women need to carefully research the types of drugs injected into their bodies. In particular, note that the injection must be performed by a qualified doctor and at a licensed medical facility.

When an accident or complication occurs, go to a medical facility immediately for examination and treatment to avoid affecting your health and leaving sequelae later on," Dr. Nghia recommends.
