Singapore Prime Minister's video is faked to promote cryptocurrency

A deepfake video (technology to fake images, sounds and videos using artificial intelligence) has recently gone viral, including images of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong giving an interview to China's CGTN and promoting a digital currency program, according to Today .

The video was doctored to make viewers believe that Mr. Li was talking about a new investment platform backed by the government and helmed by American billionaire Elon Musk.

In a Facebook post on December 29, Prime Minister Lee warned that scammers were using artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic voices and images, and that Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong had also been targeted.

According to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the scammers "have turned our real images from official events into fake images that look very convincing, but are completely fake videos in which we say things we never actually said".

"If you see or receive fraudulent videos promising guaranteed investment returns or gifts, please do not respond to them," PM Lee wrote.

The leader also advised Singaporeans to report scams and fake news to the government's official anti-scam app.
