Speaking at the 70th anniversary celebration of the ruling PAP party, Mr. Lee Hsien Loong said this would be his last speech as the head of the party.

“This completes the transition of leadership from me to my successor,” Mr. Lee said, adding that this is an important milestone in his career. At the same time, he also announced that he will continue to work at CEC in a support and advisory role.

“Thus, both in the CEC and in the Cabinet, I will not be the one who makes the first decisions, nor will I be the one who makes the final decisions,” Mr. Lee emphasized.

In his new role, he will help his successor - Lawrence Wong - consolidate his position in the party and mobilise support from Singaporeans, "to work together to address the issues and challenges ahead".

The former Singaporean prime minister shared that the leadership transition process will start from 2022, when Cabinet ministers gave overwhelming support to Mr. Wong.

After the most recent party conference in 2022, Mr. Wong became deputy secretary-general and began serving as chairman of the party's executive committee. Then, in May 2024, Mr. Wong took office as Singapore's prime minister.

“The transfer of power at that time went very smoothly,” Mr. Lee Hsien Loong emphasized.

Also at the ceremony, the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) elected 12 new members of the PAP Central Executive Committee. According to Singapore's Straits Times , the voting has been completed.
