Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko on September 1 accused his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu of continuing to wage war in Gaza for personal political goals and suggested isolating Israel to end "atrocities sponsored by some Western countries".

“We have a prime minister (of Israel) whose power depends on this war, whose political life depends on this war. He is a man who is willing to step over thousands of dead bodies to stay in office and not face justice,” Sonko said at a rally of hundreds of Palestinian supporters at the Grand Mosque in the capital Dakar.

“We must bring together all those who denounce this injustice, towards a political solution that isolates the state of Israel,” Sonko said in front of people wearing scarves in the colors of the Palestinian flag around their necks.

The head of the Senegalese government, who describes himself as a left-wing pan-Africanist, added that the issue was "to end the brutality of people that has been sponsored and approved by some Western countries".

He described Israel's ongoing activities in Palestinian territory as "destruction" and denounced the "injustice" suffered by Palestinians since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948.

The Senegalese prime minister noted that there are many divisions that prevent Muslims and Africans from speaking with one voice in the face of the crisis. He stressed that Muslim countries have remained “silent” and that “since the beginning of the crisis, the most visible actions (in support of the Palestinians) have been initiated by South Africa”, where Muslims are a minority, along with several Latin American countries. On the contrary, “all those who speak to us about democracy and human rights are the ones who support and arm Israel”.

A West African country with a nearly 95% Muslim population, supporting Palestinians internationally and close to the Arab world, Senegal has chaired the United Nations Committee on the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People since the 1970s.
