On the occasion of attending the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on October 20, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed his pleasure to meet Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone again and respectfully conveyed the warm regards of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and other senior leaders of Vietnam to comrade Sonexay Siphandone and the leaders of the Lao Party and State.

For his part, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone respectfully sent the greetings of the Lao Party and State leaders to the Vietnamese Party and State leaders and sincerely thanked Vietnam for its timely and effective cooperation and support for Laos in socio-economic development.

At the meeting, the two Prime Ministers expressed their joy at the developments in the cooperative relationship between the two countries in recent times, bringing practical benefits to the people of each country, affirming that together they will do their utmost to preserve and foster the good Vietnam-Laos relationship and pass it on to future generations, and emphasizing that the special Vietnam-Laos relationship is a priceless common asset of the two Parties and two peoples, a rule of existence and development, a vital relationship and an important resource for the cause of protection and development in each country, actively contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

In order to promote stronger and more substantial cooperation, the two Prime Ministers reviewed and evaluated the implementation of agreements between the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. Thereby, they considered the results achieved, not achieved, issues that need to be promoted or lessons learned to discuss cooperation mechanisms and implementation.

The two sides agreed to make efforts to implement the Vietnam-Laos Strategic Cooperation Agreement for the 2021-2030 period, the Vietnam-Laos Bilateral Cooperation Agreement for the 2021-2023 period, and high-level agreements and signed cooperation plans in various fields; continue to increase delegation exchanges at all levels and through channels to continuously consolidate the special and strong political relationship of trust; coordinate to ensure security, order and social safety; strengthen security and defense cooperation; and strengthen coordination in preventing and combating transnational crimes, especially drug crimes.

The two sides also agreed to make greater efforts to transform economic cooperation in quality; support each other in building an independent, self-reliant economy, associated with substantive, deep and effective international integration; strengthen connectivity between the two economies; improve the quality and efficiency of aid projects; determine to focus on removing obstacles, completely resolving some backlogs and promoting the implementation of key projects such as Vung Ang 1, 2, 3 ports; projects connecting road and railway traffic in the East-West direction...

The two Prime Ministers believe that the Nong-Khang airport, which will be put into use from May 2023, will not only help develop tourism, economy, and people-to-people exchange, but will also be a symbol of the sustainable and fruitful friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated Laos on assuming the role of ASEAN/AIPA Chair 2024 and affirmed that Vietnam is ready to support Laos in successfully assuming this role. Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone affirmed to continue to closely coordinate and support Vietnam in regional and international issues.

Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone expressed his gratitude and affirmed that he will soon pay an official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and co-chair the 46th meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Intergovernmental Committee in Vietnam.
