Ho Chi Minh City Ms. Tam, 45 years old, had sagging breasts, oversized causing shoulder and neck pain, difficulty breathing, had surgery to reduce the size and remove a benign tumor.
On October 28, Master, Doctor Nguyen Do Thuy Giang, Head of Breast Surgery Department, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that oversized breasts on the basis of high blood pressure and spinal degeneration make patients always feel heavy, have neck pain, and have difficulty breathing.
The results of the ultrasound and mammogram for breast cancer screening showed that Ms. Tam had a 2 cm tumor in her breast, and the biopsy was benign. After 5 hours, the patient underwent surgery to remove the tumor, reduce the enlarged breast, and preserve the nipple as much as possible.
The patient said that for the past 10 years she has always been self-conscious about her appearance. After the surgery, her breasts became slimmer and no longer saggy. "I have less burden on my shoulders and spine, no more difficulty breathing, and I am more confident," said Ms. Tam.

According to Dr. Giang, breast hypertrophy is a condition in which fibroglandular tumors grow rapidly and become heavier than normal (greater than 3% of body weight), occurring in one or both breasts. Most fibroglandular tumors are benign but can cause women's body shape to be unbalanced, and can cause shoulder and neck pain, numbness in the arms, headaches, shortness of breath, and loss of sensation in the nipples.
Some cases of nipple inflammation, stretch marks and rashes on the chest. Women often lose confidence, affecting their psychology, making it difficult to choose clothes.
Breast hypertrophy occurs in girls during puberty leading to psychological changes, self-consciousness about appearance, affecting quality of life.
Dr. Giang added that breast hypertrophy surgery is usually not difficult, but with breasts that are too large, it is difficult to keep the nipples. In cases of hypertrophy accompanied by cancer, surgery is often combined with treatment and breast reduction. After surgery, breast hypertrophy can still recur, especially in children who have just started puberty or whose breasts are still developing, young women or women of childbearing age.
