Phan Le Thuc Bao scored 1,133/1,200 points, the highest score since the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam was held.
Thuc Bao, 18 years old, a student at Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted in Hue, achieved the above score in the second round of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment exam, which took place in Thua Thien Hue province on May 28.
Of which, Bao achieved a perfect score of 300/300 in Math - Logic - Data Analysis, Vietnamese with 173 points, English with 186 points, Natural Sciences with 287 points and Social Sciences with 187 points. According to the score distribution announced by Ho Chi Minh City National University on June 5, the male student was the valedictorian in both exams this year.
Since the exam was held in 2018, Bao has also been the one to get the highest score.
The male student said his friends told him about his exam results while he was still half asleep at his grandmother's house. After looking it up on the school's website, Bao burst into tears, immediately showed his grandparents his results and called his parents.
"Even though I did well on the test, I couldn't believe I got such a high score, especially on the Vietnamese section," Bao said. At the end of March, Bao took part in the first round of the competency assessment exam and scored 1,052 points - among the top 20 candidates with the highest scores.
Mr. Hoang Phuoc Loi, homeroom teacher of Grade 12 Math 1, was not too surprised. According to him, the male student is an excellent student in all aspects.
"Not only in his major, Bao also does very well in other subjects, his scores are always at the top," said teacher Loi. Besides studying, the teacher commented that the male student is sociable and friendly with his friends.
Thuc Bao was born in Quang Binh, both of his parents were teachers. After passing the entrance exam to the Math 1 class of Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted in Hue, Bao moved to live with his grandparents for convenience in going to school.
Bao said that although he was far from home and missed his parents, that was also the motivation for him to try his best to study. In grade 11, the male student won a place in the final match of the second quarter of the Road to Olympia competition and finished second with 110 points. Bao also has an IELTS 7.5 English certificate.
When entering grade 12, the male student had a dual goal: focusing on reviewing for the high school graduation exam with the A01 group (Math, Physics, English) and preparing for the Competency Assessment exam. According to Bao, the knowledge content of the two exams is similar, so it is necessary to study regularly and prepare early. Therefore, about two months before the competency assessment exam, the male student accelerated his review.
As a math major, Bao had no difficulty reviewing for natural science subjects. For math and biology, he focused on listening comprehension in class, practicing by doing exercises and solving mock exams. For physics, the male student invested more time, both self-studying and attending extra classes, because this was a graduation exam subject in the combination he planned to use for university admission.
In social science subjects, in addition to listening to lectures in class, Bao also researches knowledge on social networks and updates current events. Especially in Geography, Bao said he was lucky to have a very humorous teacher, helping him absorb knowledge very quickly. As for Vietnamese, the male student spent time re-reading all the knowledge from secondary school, then systematizing it for review.
Bao has a group of close friends who study together and regularly exchange knowledge. "We solve problems together, and during breaks we discuss and compare answers," Bao said, recognizing this as a very effective way to study.
Another important thing, according to Bao, is to keep a relaxed mood and not feel pressured. The male student always focuses on understanding the lesson in class, takes reasonable breaks, and avoids staying up late when he gets home.
"I study at school in the morning, study for about an hour in the afternoon, then go to extra classes from 5 to 7 pm. After bathing, eating, and resting, I study for about two hours and then go to sleep," the male student shared.
Thanks to early preparation, Bao achieved good results in both exams. According to the male student, the competency assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University was quite good, accurately assessing the candidates' academic performance.
In the Math - Logic - Data Analysis section, the Math test content falls into basic knowledge of functions, integrals, and complex numbers; the Data Analysis test gives requirements based on tables, which are not difficult for Bao. The Logic test is more challenging for him because it requires a lot of reasoning, related to knowledge of combinations and probability.
"In the first exam, I was fooled on a few complex number questions, but this time I'm very confident," the male student said.
In the Natural Science exam, Thuc Bao said that the most difficult subject was Biology with the true-false part. The male student guessed that he lost 13 points in the exam because of these types of questions.
With Social Sciences and English, Thuc Bao easily passed. According to the male student, the knowledge is mainly in textbooks.
Vietnamese is the most "difficult" part of the exam, according to Thuc Bao. The male student said that studying Literature in class usually focuses on writing practice and cultural knowledge, but the exam to assess ability will focus on word class theory. If candidates do not review carefully, they will find it strange and have difficulty doing well.
To achieve satisfactory scores, Thuc Bao believes that the key factor is early practice.
"Knowledge and skills are things that must be accumulated over a long journey. I took the exam and brought with me what I had accumulated after three years of studying, not just a day or two," Bao said.
According to Thuc Bao, candidates preparing for the competency assessment test should stick to the test structure, identify their strengths and weaknesses to allocate time for each subject appropriately.
During the test, candidates should keep a stable mentality. "If you can still stay calm after completing more than 100/120 questions, that is a decisive factor for success or failure. The test can trick you if you cannot concentrate throughout the test," Thuc Bao shared.
In addition, candidates need to spend time reviewing their work. Bao usually has about 20 minutes to review the entire test, checking to see if all the answers have been filled in.
The male student will use his aptitude test score to register for the advanced program in Computer Science at the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.
