In May 2024, an expedition team from Jungle Boss Company Limited (Phong Nha town, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh) discovered a mysterious lake in a branch of Thung cave, part of the cave system in Hung Thoong.

The chance to find Floating Lake

The lake is located about 1km from the cave entrance, with a surface area of about 100m2, surrounded by stalactites. What is special is that the lake is located about 15m higher than the main underground river in the cave, looking like it is "hanging" on the cave wall, so it is named the Floating Lake.

After being announced, many people were amazed by the initial images of the unique and one-of-a-kind structure of the Floating Lake. The story of how this lake was discovered is also fascinating.

Cave expert Nguyen Van Uy (born in 1988), Director of Safety at Jungle Boss, shared that unlike previous periodic surveys of Hung Thoong's safety system, the opportunity to find Lo Lung Lake was very special and brought many emotions.

According to Mr. Uy, he had previously participated in many survey trips, even swam along the underground river right below but did not discover the Floating Lake above his head due to limited visibility.

During the trip in May 2024, his group decided to leave earlier than previous trips, so they had the chance to encounter a mysterious lake hanging on the cave wall.

“This time, the air temperature inside and outside the cave did not have a big difference, so the water vapor environment was diluted, visibility was wider, and we accidentally discovered a 'black spot' on the other side of the road,” said Mr. Uy.

After a period of searching, the survey team discovered a small, narrow path located high up, close to the cave wall, with a width of less than 1 meter. After conquering the small path, the survey team named this place "Lung Trung Alley".

The rare difference in Floating Lake

“The closer we got to the end of Lung Chung Gorge, the more surprised we were when we saw a deep, jade-green lake that never dried up in the dry season, something rarely seen in other calcium lakes inside caves. After discussing, the group agreed to name it Lo Lung Lake,” Uy added.

In particular, there is a stalactite suspended above the lake surface. This is a rare form of stalactite because to form this structure and in this unique location requires many factors, including the process of repeated formation and destruction.

The only way to reach Lo Lung Lake is Lung Trung Alley. The narrow path requires the use of safety equipment. “Currently, our group has installed a safety rope system so exploring will be easier,” said Mr. Uy.
