Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huong in Ta Mo village, Muong Bu commune (Muong La district, Son La) is earning hundreds of millions of dong each year thanks to developing the giant apple variety. According to Mr. Huong, apple trees appeared in Son La decades ago but the selling price is very cheap, sometimes only fluctuating from 2,000 to 3,000 VND/kg, at most up to more than 10,000 VND/kg, the previous production scale was small, fragmented, and low efficiency, so many households have switched to growing other fruit trees.

Muong La has a climate and soil that are very suitable for growing apples. After graduating from university, Mr. Huong decided to return to his hometown to start a business. Realizing the potential of the local jujube tree, he has persistently researched and developed this variety over the past 10 years.

In 2014, he founded Hung Thinh Cooperative, gathering households in the commune with the goal of developing agriculture together. The Cooperative consists of 20 households producing many different types of fruit trees, of which 7 member households have chosen the jujube tree as the main tree. By 2019, the Cooperative's 80 hectares of fruit trees, including jujube, had achieved VietGAP certification, the products ensuring safety standards, meeting the increasing consumption needs of the market.

The jujube tree is well adapted to the climate and soil of Muong Bu commune (Muong La district), the tree grows strongly and brings high productivity. Each household in the commune only needs 1 - 2 jujube trees in the garden to have a significant income. With the current apple price of 50,000 VND/kg, 1 hectare of about 300 jujube trees can earn 600 - 700 million VND. The grafted jujube tree in the first years of harvest can yield 50kg/tree, a 10-year-old tree can yield more than 100kg/tree.

Mr. Huong said that the advantage of the apple tree lies in its simple planting technique, few pests and diseases and it can grow well even with grafted varieties. The planting season starts from February to March every year and after about 9-10 months, that is, in December, the apple tree can be harvested.

With an organic farming process that protects the environment, Hung Thinh Cooperative uses 100% organic fertilizer combined with composted manure to fertilize the plants, and clean irrigation water is taken from waterfalls to water the apple trees. The Cooperative prioritizes the use of herbs to prevent pests and diseases, and only when absolutely necessary does it use biological pesticides on the permitted list according to the VietGAP production process.

Before being sold on the market, all jujubes are strictly inspected for quality, no preservatives are used, ensuring safety for consumers. Hung Thinh jujubes have many outstanding features, large fruit, thin skin with a cool green color, thick, white, crispy flesh, rich sweetness, mild aroma. This fruit is rich in vitamins, fiber, good for the digestive system and supports weight loss, so it is very popular.

In 2023, the cooperative's apple products will achieve 3-star OCOP, which is the result of the tireless efforts of Mr. Huong and the households in Hung Thinh Cooperative. The apple brand is not only an agricultural product but also the pride of the Muong Bu people, contributing to enhancing the economic and cultural value of this land.

Many large supermarkets such as Big C, Lotte, Vinmart in Hanoi and clean fruit and vegetable stores in Son La and neighboring provinces have sold this product. Especially, on holidays and Tet, Hung Thinh apples are chosen by customers as gifts, symbolizing the flavor and specialties of the Northwest region.
