Giving a gift on March 8, I was disappointed when I discovered my mother-in-law's online actions

Since the day I got married, I have always fulfilled my responsibilities to both families. I give my husband's family a little more priority, because my husband's parents support us a lot in taking care of the children and buying a house.

On holidays like March 8th or October 20th, I always think about giving my mother-in-law a gift half a month in advance. Sometimes I give money, sometimes I give flowers, and sometimes I choose to invite them to a fancy restaurant to make up for their daily hardships. The gift may not be too expensive, but it is my heart, my gratitude, my respect and my care for my mother-in-law.

My mother-in-law is a meticulous and perfectionist person. Knowing her personality, I try to be thoughtful in everything. The relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law cannot avoid conflicts and disagreements. However, I always try to harmonize this relationship, helping my husband work with peace of mind.

Since March 8th last year, I decided not to give my mother-in-law any more gifts. Instead, on International Women’s Day or Vietnamese Women’s Day, my husband and I would invite her out to dinner. This stemmed from something my mother did that made my daughter-in-law unhappy.

My mother-in-law was happy with the gift I gave her, but what she did afterwards left her daughter-in-law disappointed (Illustration: IT).

A year ago, I bought my mother-in-law a handbag for nearly 2 million VND from abroad. I did not ask for her opinion first because I saw her often carrying the old bag when going out. Although it was still usable, I think women like to have new bags, clothes, and shoes to show off to friends.

To give my mother-in-law a gift on March 8, after Tet, I asked my old classmate to buy it abroad and send it back. Then, I asked someone to carefully wrap it for my mother-in-law. I was happy to choose a beautiful, high-quality bag with a color that suits middle age.

On the day the whole family gathered to celebrate March 8, my husband and I gave my mother a gift. A week later, my husband, my parents and I went to a wedding in the countryside but did not see my mother-in-law bring the new bag. I wanted to ask but felt a little embarrassed so I did not dare.

However, in the following outings, I still did not see my mother use the new bag. I felt disappointed because all the effort I put into choosing a gift to make my mother-in-law happy seemed to be unappreciated. Meanwhile, the new dress my sister-in-law gave me was worn by my mother-in-law many times.

While I was feeling sad, I happened to see the bag and box similar to the gift I gave my mother-in-law on a group that liquidates handbags, clothes, and cosmetics. Before, I didn't know my mother-in-law was also in that group.

In the post, my mother-in-law wanted to sell the bag she was given because she didn’t like it and didn’t need it. The selling price my mother-in-law offered was half the purchase price. I confirmed that it was my mother-in-law because the Facebook account was hers. After reading the post, I was disappointed and disappointed again.

After receiving the gift, the mother-in-law has the right to decide whether to use it or not. However, I feel that my kindness is not appreciated. Even if she doesn't like it, I think she should leave it at home and not let her daughter-in-law down like that.

This year, on March 8, my husband and I invited my in-laws to eat Japanese food for a change of taste. I think with the gift of a meal, everyone will have complete joy.
