This afternoon, September 17, in Hanoi, Hanoi Medical University organized a meeting with outstanding new students in the 2024 university admission season. They are the candidates with the highest scores among those admitted to the same major (19 students); or were directly admitted thanks to their high achievements in the national excellent student exam, international excellent student exam (95 students). Notably, there are 4 students who won gold medals in international Olympiads in biology and chemistry (all 4 of these students chose to study medicine).

Professor Ta Thanh Van, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hanoi Medical University and all members of the school's board of directors attended this meeting.
The difficulty of studying in medical school is that it is "unique"
According to Professor Nguyen Huu Tu, Principal of Hanoi Medical University, the meeting showed the deep concern of the school's leaders for the excellent new students, because the teachers really expect to train them to become excellent doctors, experts, and researchers... If this expectation becomes a reality, they will be important factors in leading Vietnamese medicine further in the future.
With the achievements you have made in your final year of high school, you are truly excellent students. However, you are now standing at the starting line for another journey, lasting at least 4-6 years of study, after passing and enrolling in Hanoi Medical University. Conquering this journey is not as difficult as conquering national and international awards that most of you have achieved in your previous journey. But the new journey is certainly a very different one.
Professor Nguyen Huu Tu, Principal of Hanoi Medical University, shared with excellent new students: the difficulty of studying medicine is difficult in a "unique" way.
Professor Nguyen Huu Tu emphasized: "The path you have just gone through is a very difficult one. The path you are about to take is a very different one. Not as difficult, but different! If you are not wholehearted, dedicated, persistent, and determined to overcome difficulties, you will not be able to lead."
Professor Nguyen Huu Tu said that the difficulty of studying at medical school, especially for doctors, is a "unique" difficulty. Because medicine is both a natural science and a social science. Logic in medicine is not the same as in natural science, it is not always possible to deduce something from this formula. Students have to learn some laws, remember and memorize discrete knowledge, but it will create an important overall foundation for specialized knowledge later.
"If you don't make a good transition in your learning style and don't change your learning style quickly, you won't succeed. Usually, when you're unlucky and unsuccessful, you'll be disappointed and discouraged... There have been some students like that. So I hope all of us sitting here will quickly change our state. Enter school and enter the profession as soon as possible. With your existing abilities and very good qualities, I believe that if you persevere and are determined, you will succeed in the journey ahead," said Professor Nguyen Huu Tu.
Professor Nguyen Huu Tu added: "The only wish that the teachers want to send to you is to try not to waste the achievements and qualities that you have. You should become one of the excellent students in the future, when you graduate from Hanoi Medical University. Once you have graduated with excellent results from Hanoi Medical University, it means that you have the prospect of becoming excellent doctors and experts in the medical industry in the future."
"Study well, dream a lot, love passionately"
Professor Ta Thanh Van said that 5 years ago, the Training Department of Hanoi Medical University conducted a study comparing the learning outcomes over 6 years of study between two groups of students with different starting points.
One group is considered to have the potential for elite training, because they were admitted directly thanks to their high scores in the national excellent student exam. The other group is considered "mass", because they were admitted in the usual way (through the university entrance exam, and later through the national high school exam). However, the learning results during the 6 years of study at Hanoi Medical University show no difference between these two groups, although the starting point of group 1 can be considered "outstanding".
Professor Ta Thanh Van, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hanoi Medical University, told the excellent new students: let glory be in the past.
"This makes teachers very worried, why do students with very good starting points study no differently than normal students? Is it possible that teachers have not created a training environment for students with outstanding qualities to develop their full potential? From these concerns, the school has come up with many solutions to help each student develop their personal abilities, such as creating clubs, creating many forums... so that each student has a suitable place to "release energy", said Professor Ta Thanh Van.
According to Professor Ta Thanh Van, the achievements that students have made in their high school journey are their personal efforts, but there are also great contributions from their families and schools. They are cared for, followed, and urged by their parents and teachers every hour, every day. But when they go to university, they are free and have to take care of themselves. Therefore, if they are not self-reliant and do not overcome themselves, they will fail.
Professor Ta Thanh Van said that many students enter Hanoi Medical University with pride because they are good at solving math problems. But being good at solving math problems does not mean being good at surgery. Those two things are very different. At Hanoi Medical University, there is a slogan that every generation of students considers as their goal: "study well, dream a lot, love passionately". In which "love passionately" is not only about love between couples but also about passion, about love for the profession. Because medicine is a profession that if you do not have passion, you cannot study well or work well.
Professor Ta Thanh Van said: "Before the new journey, I have a piece of advice for you: let your glory be in the past. The faster you let it go, the more successful you will be. Holding on to your past achievements and being proud of them will not help you in the next 6 years of study. From now on, A6 building (Examination Center of Hanoi Medical University - PV) will welcome you periodically."
