New students: Be proactive in learning, avoid pitfalls

Báo Sài Gòn Giải phóngBáo Sài Gòn Giải phóng20/09/2024

New students admitted to universities and colleges have entered the first week of activities organized by the schools. These are important lessons, helping new students grasp many issues of "independence" when entering university, getting used to life away from family, being proactive in all activities such as studying, living, and integrating into a completely new environment.

Build a study plan

According to Dr. Le Thi Thanh Mai, former Head of Student Affairs Department (Ho Chi Minh City National University), annual statistics of schools show that many students are warned about academic performance or suspended from studying, mainly due to the following reasons: owing too many subjects, not completing tuition fees, not attending school (attendance)... Therefore, new students need to fully participate in the first weeks of the semester, because this program equips new students with a lot of content before entering the official study program. New students will know what to do, what not to do, how to build a reasonable study plan...

Sharing with the new students of the school during the recent first week of activities, Dr. Tran Dinh Ly, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, said: After being admitted to university, new students have just begun the journey to fulfill their dreams. The remaining 3.5-5 years (depending on the major) still have many difficulties for them. Therefore, they should be calm and cautious to complete this journey. First of all, new students must build their own study and living plans appropriately. On the other hand, new students need to participate in clubs, teams, groups, and extracurricular activities of the school to improve their knowledge, skills, and attitudes when working in groups - an important skill after graduating and going to work.

In addition to knowledge in the classroom, students need to improve other “soft” skills, and this is the most important time for them to improve their foreign languages, information technology, communication, etc. The university environment is completely different from the high school environment, so they must train themselves to be self-studying and researching continuously. “The main job of students is to study and do scientific research. If you can arrange your time, you should find a suitable part-time job or invest in a suitable field to both earn income and accumulate experience, and especially get acquainted with starting a business while still in school,” emphasized Dr. Tran Dinh Ly.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung, Deputy Director of the Center for Admissions and Business Relations (University of Finance and Marketing, Ho Chi Minh City), said that when participating in the first-term political study program, new students need to pay attention to contents such as the training program (number of credits to complete, output standards), student affairs, examination work, Union and association activities, building a study plan, part-time jobs, learning skills, English, etc. Therefore, to be well prepared for this journey, new students especially need to manage their studies well. You need to carefully study the training regulations and regulations related to academic affairs, such as: course registration, academic affairs consideration conditions, graduation consideration; learning outcome assessment scale; output standards; regulations and policies in student affairs... This will be information to help you be proactive and meticulous in determining your learning goals, building your own learning plan, and avoiding unnecessary pressure or incidents during the learning process.

Actively participate in school activities

According to Dr. Le Thi Thanh Mai, the most obvious benefit when students participate in the activities of the Youth Union, associations, and clubs of their schools is the strength of social relationships, which is especially true after starting work. When entering a new learning environment, participating in clubs, teams, and groups will bring peers from all over the country closer together, where you will be able to share your learning experiences with your seniors as well as experience meaningful things yourself through extracurricular activities and community projects. Choose organizations and clubs that suit your personal interests and passions, but still ensure a balance between studying and activities.

Meanwhile, MSc. Dang Kien Cuong, Head of Student Affairs Department (Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry), shared that students must learn to be responsible, less dependent on their families and accumulate experience for themselves. You can do this by finding a suitable part-time job. In the current technology era, accessing sources of information providing jobs is not difficult; however, you should calculate and choose appropriately, prioritizing part-time internships related to your major or career orientation that you have chosen. The skills and experience accumulated during this time will be a solid foundation for your startup plan or future job position. Note that your main task is to study, so you need to allocate time reasonably, balancing between studying and part-time work, avoiding affecting your studies.

MSc. Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center (Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade), emphasized: Currently, new students face many fraudulent tricks such as impersonation, being lured into traps to steal money. Many multi-level operators lure students to take their parents' money to participate in multi-level marketing... Therefore, right in the first week of the semester, many schools have dedicated a topic to warn students about issues from multi-level marketing, identifying fraudulent tricks, activities to attract participation in reactionary forums... Schools have always warned students from first year to final year, but the most worrying thing is still first year students. Therefore, new students absolutely must not participate in multi-level marketing lines, and should be wary of tricks such as "easy work, high salary, little investment, big profit".
