Siri is disappointing, AI is also difficult to save

Apple's Siri virtual assistant is facing a new wave of performance criticism, with many users reporting that Siri is unable to answer simple questions. This comes as Apple is aggressively promoting "Apple Intelligence" features that are expected to enhance Siri's intelligence and capabilities.

A recent Reddit post drew attention to the issue. User “Guitar_Scary” shared a screenshot demonstrating Siri’s failure to understand the question. In the screenshot, Siri responds “Sorry, I don’t understand” when asked “What month is it?”

Other users were quick to share their own disheartening experiences. “Swagtagonist” commented: “I asked Siri to play a podcast and it said, ‘I’m trying to play from Apple Podcasts but it doesn’t seem like you have that app installed. I didn’t even know you could delete that app.”

Another Reddit post noted another serious bug with Siri. User “aidanc_” shared a screenshot of them asking Siri, “How many months and days until October 18, 2025?” Siri gave a completely wrong answer: “Two months to go.”

The problem isn't just that Siri's quality has been deteriorating over time, but also that users' expectations of a system like Siri are growing.

It is likely that Apple will introduce Apple Intelligence upgrades to Siri next year, bringing positive surprises. However, there has been a clear change in user perception, and Siri is showing disappointing performance.

There have been calls to kill Siri in the past. Voice control is still an important part of the user experience, but it doesn’t have to be entirely reliant on Siri.

Continuing to add new features to an outdated system only prolongs user frustration. So Apple should start by discontinuing the Siri brand. Declare that Siri has completed its mission and move to maintenance mode, stop developing new features, and remove those with high failure rates.

Apple also needs to restore the reputation of the Apple Intelligence brand by focusing on the features that have been implemented. Choose 3 main pillars: Writing tools: auto-correction, message summary: summarizing important information, and Creativity: creative tools.

Apple may not do this, but they should allow other AI voice assistants like ChatGPT's Enhanced Voice Mode, Google Gemini, or Amazon's upcoming Alexa+ to be more deeply integrated into the iPhone system.

This means users can activate them without unlocking their device, using Voice Control and through accessories like AirPods and Apple Watch.

If Apple doesn't really focus on improving Siri and Apple Intelligent, maybe many users will be willing to switch to Android phones with deep integration of ChatGPT.

Over time, the iPhone may lose its appeal to people who value AI voice assistants more than blue iMessage bubbles.
