With a capacity of 24,116 TEUs (standard 6-meter containers), MSC China is one of the world's largest container ships ever delivered, surpassing Ever Alot - a ship with a capacity of 24,004 TEUs. MSC China was built by Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard (HZS), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
The series of the largest container ships consists of four, with MSC China being the last to be delivered, according to Gu Lijun, technical director at HZS. The first ship, MSC Tessa, was delivered in March.
MSC China is 399.99 m long, 61.5 m wide and 33.2 m high, with a deck the size of about four standard football fields. The maximum number of stacked containers can be up to 25, equivalent to the height of a 22-story building. The ship can carry more than 240,000 tons of cargo.
MSC China is equipped with high-tech environmentally friendly equipment, such as a desulfurization tower. The ship has a small pear-shaped bow, large-diameter propellers and energy-saving pipes.
In addition, the ship uses for the first time a bubble drag reduction system and a coaxial motor generator system, allowing the ship to carry more cargo while consuming less fuel and emitting less CO2. With an energy efficiency design index (EEDI) and optimized fuel consumption, the ship can reduce emissions by about 6,000 tons per year.
To date, Jiangnan Shipyard and HZS, two subsidiaries of CSSC, have developed and delivered 13 ultra-large container ships, among the largest in the world, making Shanghai one of the world's research and development and construction centers for ultra-large container ships.
