Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link continues testing to receive super container ship 232,494.5 DWT
If Gemadept - Terminal Link successfully receives the 232,494.5 DWT offloaded container ship - the largest container ship in the world today, it will open up more opportunities for Vietnamese exporters to bring goods to European and North American ports.

The Ministry of Transport has just sent an official dispatch to the Vietnam Maritime Administration and Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link Port Joint Stock Company regarding the trial operation of receiving container ships with a capacity of up to 232,494.5 DWT with reduced load.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Transport approved the policy to allow Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link port to continue to operate on a trial basis to receive container ships with a tonnage of up to 232,494.5 DWT with reduced load as proposed by the Vietnam Maritime Administration; the trial operation period is until June 30, 2025.
Gemadept Cai Mep Port Joint Stock Company - Terminal Link is responsible for complying with the instructions of the Vietnam Maritime Administration and relevant agencies in the process of carrying out procedures, receiving container ships with a tonnage of up to 232,494.5 DWT to reduce load in and out of the Port; taking full responsibility in the process of receiving ships into the wharf if an incident occurs and investment efficiency; not requiring the Ministry of Transport to invest in and renovate existing public infrastructure.
The Vietnam Maritime Administration is responsible for only allowing the Port to receive ships with a tonnage of up to 232,494.5 DWT with reduced load when ensuring suitable conditions regarding existing shipping channels, natural conditions, operating conditions and other related contents to ensure the safety of construction structures, maritime safety, maritime security, fire and explosion prevention and environmental pollution prevention.
In mid-2023, Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link port was approved by the Ministry of Transport and continued to operate on a trial basis to receive container ships with a tonnage of up to 232,494.5 DWT with reduced load.
Cai Mep Gemalink Port of Cai Mep Gemadept Port Joint Stock Company – Terminal Link is located on the right bank of the Vung Tau – Thi Vai shipping channel and was announced by the Vietnam Maritime Administration to be put into use in June 2021 to receive container ships with a capacity of up to 200,000 DWT.
In the past time, Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link port has received many container ships with a capacity of up to 232,494.5 DWT for safety testing, especially on February 19, 2024, this port safely received the world's largest container ship HMM LE HARVE of the Alliance with a length of 399.9m, a capacity of up to 232,606.5 DWT.
During the implementation of receiving large tonnage ships entering and leaving Cai Mep Gemadept – Terminal Link port, the Vietnam Maritime Administration directed the Vung Tau Maritime Port Authority and related units to coordinate in developing a plan to ensure maritime safety and organize the successful reception, ensuring maritime safety for ships entering and leaving the ports.
Cai Mep Container Port is a seaport area of Vietnam that has received the attention of major shipping lines such as Maersk and Hapag Lloyd..., the world's largest container ship service routes for long-distance routes (Europe, America) are continuing to trust and expect that in the near future, Cai Mep Container Port will receive many large-tonnage ships for operation.
“In order to maintain existing shipping routes, enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese container ports with other ports in the world, increase maritime fee revenue, and make the most of the infrastructure of the Vung Tau - Thi Vai shipping route that has been invested in and built, it is necessary to continue to extend the trial operation period for container ships with a tonnage of up to 232,494.5 DWT to reduce load in and out of Cai Mep Gemadept - Terminal Link port as proposed by the port operator,” the leader of the Vietnam Maritime Administration proposed.
