With maximum winds of 151 km/h near the eye of the storm, Bebinca made landfall in the city of nearly 25 million people at around 7:30 a.m. local time today, state media reported, making it the strongest storm to hit Shanghai since Typhoon Gloria in 1949.

Shanghai is rarely directly affected by the powerful typhoons that often hit southern China. Last week, Hainan Island and neighboring provinces were hit hard by Typhoon Yagi.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled from Shanghai's two airports since the night of September 15, and the megacity's railway station has suspended some train services. The disruptions have had a significant impact on people's lives, especially as China is in the midst of a three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.

Resorts in Shanghai, including Shanghai Disney Resort, Jinjiang Theme Park and Shanghai Wildlife Park, have been temporarily closed and many ferries have been suspended.

China's Ministry of Emergency Management said in a statement on September 14 that the storm would bring heavy to torrential rain, with "localized or extremely heavy rain" from September 15 to 17.

Chinese media reported that 377,000 people had been evacuated from Shanghai. Meanwhile, in the nearby city of Zhoushan, restaurants, supermarkets and shops closed early in the day and public transport services were suspended.

The typhoon is expected to bring up to 250mm of rain to some areas on the east coast, which will be the hardest hit, according to Chinese media.

The strongest typhoon to hit Shanghai in recent decades was Typhoon Gloria in 1949, which devastated the city with winds gusting to 144 km/h.

The typhoon is also expected to impact Zhejiang Province. According to the Zhejiang Maritime Safety Administration, all coastal port operations have been suspended, coastal passenger transport routes have been halted, and construction projects related to waterways have been halted.
