On January 17, the Inspector of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health suddenly inspected the clinic on Tran Binh Trong Street, Ward 3, District 5 (Ho Chi Minh City).
This is the clinic where Dr. TTT consulted and performed gender selection for the reporter that Tuoi Tre reported on in part 1 of the series " The pain of choosing the gender of the fetus".
According to records, the clinic has 2 floors, the 1st floor is the ultrasound and consultation area, the 2nd floor is the testing room.
At the time of inspection, the Department of Health Inspectorate determined that the clinic had an operating license, the facility did not have a signboard and did not provide information on the gender of the fetus as prescribed.
Dr. T. said he had read recent information about his consulting and accepting to choose the sex of the fetus as reported by the press.
However, this doctor said that the information was incorrect and if the client had said he wanted to choose the sex of the fetus from the beginning, he would not have given the consultation.
Through inspection, Dr. T. added that the clinic cooperates with many hospitals, including the reproductive support hospital in District 6 (HCMC), which the reporter reported in part 1.
On the 2nd floor, Dr. T. said it was the homeowner's room, but when he opened the door to check inside, he found medicine, medical supplies, equipment, and medical records of the clinic - Photo: THU HIEN
In the second floor testing area, there are two locked rooms. Mr. T. said that these are the rooms of the homeowner who is currently away and cannot be opened.
However, the inspection team discovered medical records in the room and asked Mr. T. to open the door. Mr. T. then asked the clinic staff to open the door for inspection.
Upon inspection, it was found that these rooms contained many medical equipment, medicines, ultrasound machines, clinic records... and were not the homeowner's rooms as Mr. T. said.
The Health Department Inspector has made a record at the clinic and continues to clarify the incident.
Earlier on the morning of January 14, the Department of Health Inspectors conducted a surprise inspection of the reproductive support hospital on Ly Chieu Hoang Street (District 6) - the place that Tuoi Tre reported on in part 1 of the series "The pain of choosing the sex of the fetus".
According to observation, the hospital receiving the inspection team included Dr. HCC.
Unlike the consultation, when asked by the inspector, Dr. C. confirmed that there was no consultation on IVF to choose the gender of the fetus because regulations do not allow it.
Many places support gender selection of fetuses
As Tuoi Tre reported in the recent series of reports "The pain of choosing the sex of the fetus" , over the past 19 years (since 2006), the gender gap at birth in Vietnam has remained very high, with one year seeing 114 boys/100 girls.
Tuoi Tre 's verification shows that there is a "market" for reproductive support, providing services for choosing the sex of fetuses, operating quietly.
With the "assistance" of professionals such as doctors, hospitals, clinics in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or brokers, many couples easily achieve their wishes by openly saying they want to have a "baby like the father" (boy) or "baby like the mother" (girl).
Following the Tuoi Tre article, Mr. Ha Anh Duc - Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, Ministry of Health - said that anyone who assists will be severely punished. There is currently a law prohibiting gender selection, so anyone who assists is violating the law.
