A Nintendo representative confirmed to The Verge that pre-orders, originally scheduled for April 9, will be postponed, allowing the company to “evaluate the potential impact of new tariffs and market fluctuations.”
The Switch 2 was officially announced on April 3rd – the same day that Donald Trump announced new tariffs on a number of US trading partners. The official release date remains June 5th, but pre-orders will be updated later.
Nintendo did not specify whether the new tax policy will increase the price of the Switch 2 or related accessories. However, the current price of $ 449 of the device is significantly higher than the previous version of the Switch ( $ 299 ). Game prices are also at $ 69 - $ 79 , higher than the average.
The impact of this policy is starting to spread. Steve Jackson Games called it a “seismic shock to the entire industry,” analysts said the auto industry would “take a serious hit,” and the PSA card appraisal service has temporarily stopped accepting products from outside the United States.

The new Switch version has a larger screen (7.9 inches, 1080p resolution), 256 GB of internal storage, and a dedicated “C” button for in-game chat.
The device still retains the same 13.99 mm thickness as the first version, but feels more solid in the hand, especially when playing in handheld mode.
In our experience with Mario Kart World , the console performed consistently despite the chaotic game environment. The new Joy-Con controllers connect magnetically instead of the old mechanism, allowing for more secure operation when holding for long periods of time, especially during intense racing.
The Switch 2's new hardware power is evident in the gameplay. Mario Kart World is much larger, with tracks up to 24 players, weather effects like heavy rain, and rich interactive environments. Despite all the added elements, the game runs smoothly, without any stuttering or lag.
While it doesn’t quite reach the graphical detail of the PS5 or Xbox Series X, the Switch 2 is still a clear step up from its predecessor. Nintendo continues to play to its strengths: using its own exclusive games to make the most of the hardware, turning a “slightly bigger, slightly more powerful” upgrade into a truly unique experience.
Nintendo originally planned to send out invitations to pre-order directly through its website to eligible users starting May 8. However, with the new change, the release date of the invitations has not been determined.
