According to PhoneArena , thanks to strong iPhone 14 sales, Apple became the best-selling manufacturer in the last quarter of 2022, but the company had to give up the lead to Samsung in the first quarter of 2023. Samsung's strong Q1 sales were boosted by the newly launched Galaxy S23 series, of which the company sold 61.5 million units in the quarter, up 5.5% from the previous quarter.

For its part, Apple saw sales fall 27.5% from the previous quarter, to 53.3 million units, with 78% of that figure coming from the iPhone 14.
In line with the overall market trend, Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo all saw declines in sales in Q1 2023. Oppo and its subsidiaries Realme and OnePlus shipped 26.8 million phones in Q1, down 17% from the previous quarter. Xiaomi, which also owns Redmi and Poco, shipped 26.5 million units, down 27.4% from the previous quarter. Combined sales of Vivo and its sub-brand iQOO reached 20 million units, down 14.2% from the previous quarter.
Overall, this was the worst quarter for smartphone sales since 2014, when a total of 250 million units were sold. Sales were down 19.5% year-on-year, which could be attributed to the gloomy global economic environment. In contrast, 301 million smartphones were shipped in Q4 2022.
Analysts say the current quarter is likely to be a little better, with sales expected to rise about 5% from the previous quarter to 260 million units. Apple and Samsung are unlikely to contribute to that increase, with both expected to see lower sales, with demand for the Galaxy S23 series likely to fall, leading to a 10% drop in sales for Samsung and an even larger 20% drop for Apple.
