Management of wildlife breeding facilities

Yen Lap District Forest Protection Department inspected the civet farm of Mr. Nguyen Dinh in Dong Thinh commune.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh in Dong Thinh commune is one of the households in the district raising civets. He shared: “Realizing that the locality has suitable conditions in terms of climate and food for raising civets, in early 2019, I invested 60 million VND to build a cage and buy civets and civets for breeding. Before raising, my family reported and was fully instructed by the forest rangers on the registration procedures to be granted a breeding facility code. The family fully informed the rangers about the times of importing and exporting the herd. With 26 individuals at the beginning, the family's facility has now grown to more than 40 individuals. Currently, the selling price of commercial civets is about 1.8 million VND/kg, the price of civets for breeding is about 14-15 million VND/pair, bringing a good income to the family."

Yen Lap currently has 14 facilities for raising endangered, precious, rare and common wild animals with a total of more than 500 individuals. The wild animals raised are mainly palm civets, palm civets, bamboo rats and Asian bears.

To strengthen the management and protection of wildlife in the area, the Forest Protection Department has coordinated with the People's Committees of communes and towns to propagate to the people to comply with the provisions of the law on management, protection and conservation of endangered, precious and rare wildlife species; not to hunt or use products originating from endangered, precious and rare wildlife in the area.

At the same time, develop a plan to coordinate with functional forces to regularly inspect and strictly handle organizations and individuals who violate legal regulations on hunting, trapping, capturing, buying, selling, transporting, captivity, processing, trading, and consuming endangered, precious, and rare wildlife species in the area.

In addition to the regulations on wildlife breeding as prescribed, the responsible officers of the District periodically go to wildlife breeding facilities to inspect, control and collect information such as: fluctuations in the herd, breeding situation, specific breeding individuals... instruct new breeding facilities on necessary procedures and granting of facility codes.

Comrade Do Manh Hiep - Deputy Head of the District Forest Protection Department said: Along with creating favorable conditions for wildlife breeding facilities in the area to operate, the district's functional agencies have also strengthened management to limit violations in this activity. Currently, the total number of wildlife species being raised at facilities in the district are all of legal origin. The breeding facilities strictly comply with the State's regulations on solid cages, suitable for the characteristics of the species being raised, ensuring hygiene and safety for people; fully monitor and record the livestock head, when there is an increase or decrease in the herd, the facilities promptly report according to regulations. Raising, growing and reproducing these species not only helps to preserve the wildlife gene source, but also contributes to the local socio-economic development.

In the coming time, Yen Lap District Forest Protection Department will continue to coordinate with functional agencies and local authorities to organize propaganda and dissemination to people of the State's legal documents on wildlife management and protection; strengthen management, inspection and control of wildlife farming to prevent, detect and promptly handle violations. In addition, resolutely and strictly handle violations to put wildlife farming activities in order; strictly handle cases of captivity that take advantage of buying wildlife of illegal origin to legalize and profit.
