Ms. Thach Thi Thu - wife of artist Tung Lam - announced that the comedian passed away at 5am this morning at his home in Binh Thanh District (HCMC), at the age of 89. "The artist passed away peacefully in his sleep," the family said.
Previously, his health had weakened after a surgery earlier this year, he was unable to walk and had to rely on his wife's care.

Artist Tung Lam was born in 1934. When he first started his career, he worked in the music industry and formed a singing group with musician Lam Phuong and actor Van Hung.
After the band disbanded, Tung Lam gradually turned to comedy. Before 1975, he was one of the most famous comedians in the South.
He is known for his talent for making people laugh, just by stepping on stage he can make the audience laugh without having to act. The artist also made an impression when participating in the comedy film Saigon Four Freaks with La Thoai Tan, Kha Nang and Thanh Viet.

In January, the Ngu Long Du Ky group (actresses Phi Phung, Phuong Dung, Thuy Muoi, Nam Cha and Miss Diem Huong) visited comedian Tung Lam's house to wish him a happy new year and revealed that he had become much weaker and was mostly confined to his home. His wife and daughter had to take turns taking care of him and assisting him with his daily activities.
At that time, despite his limited health and unclear mind, artist Tung Lam still missed his profession. His wife said that sometimes he couldn't sleep, calling out the names of his parents and relatives who had performed with him. Sometimes, he took out his vest to wear because he missed the stage.
