France Ligue 1 champions have made contact with coach Mikel Arteta after talks with Julian Nagelsmann collapsed.
According to RMC Sport , sports advisor Luis Campos has been in talks with Arteta over the past few weeks about the possibility of leading PSG from the 2023-2024 season.
The Spanish coach is highly regarded for his achievements and ability to build a young team at Arsenal. Since returning to the Emirates Stadium in 2019, Arteta has helped the team win an English Community Shield, an FA Cup, and finish as runners-up in the 2022-2023 Premier League to return to the Champions League after 6 years.
In addition, when he was still playing professionally, Arteta played for PSG on loan in 2001-2002, scoring five goals in 53 matches, and speaking French fluently.
However, the possibility of Arteta accepting PSG's offer is very low. The 41-year-old coach is comfortable with the project at the Emirates Stadium, eager to lead Arsenal to compete in the Champions League next season and has a contract until the summer of 2025. In addition, as an advisor and not a sporting director, Campos is not the main decision maker in appointing a new coach. RMC Sport revealed that Campos contacted Arteta only to find out if the coach was interested in the PSG project.
Although not officially announced, PSG has fired coach Christophe Galtier. In the 2022-2023 season, PSG was eliminated early from the Champions League round of 16, the French Cup round of 16 and won Ligue 1 with one point more than runner-up Lens.
Julian Nagelsmann was PSG's top candidate, but the two sides failed to agree on key terms after two weeks of negotiations. As a result, the Ligue 1 champions will not sign the German coach.
According to British newspaper Sportmail , unlike Arteta, the negotiation process between PSG and Porto coach Sergio Conceicao is taking place actively. Conceicao is represented by Jorge Mendes, a super agent who is said to be coming to France this weekend to negotiate directly with PSG's leadership.
Conceicao is considered a good fit for the Parc des Princes, having previously coached Nantes in Ligue 1 and speaking French. The promise of spending big money on transfers and having a star-studded squad that includes Kylian Mbappe - at least for now - is said to be an attractive proposition for Conceicao. However, PSG will have to pay $20 million to break the Portuguese coach's contract with Porto, which runs until 2024.
Thiago Motta, who made a splash by leading Bologna to ninth place in Serie A this season, is also a potential candidate. Motta's advantage is that he played for PSG from 2012-2018, held the captain's armband for a long time, scored 12 goals in 232 games, won five Ligue 1 titles, won four French Cups, four French League Cups and five French Super Cups.
