According to the official announcement from UEFA, the team that reaches the Europa League semi-finals will receive 4.2 million euros in prize money. Adding the bonuses from the previous rounds, MU is sure to receive more than 13.1 million euros up to this point.
Europa League teams receive specific bonuses depending on their performance in each stage. Participation in the qualifying round alone earns each team €4.31 million. At this stage, a win brings in €450,000, while a draw is worth €150,000.
As they progress to the knockout stages, the stakes continue to rise. Play-off winners receive an additional €300,000, while a place in the round of 16 is worth €1.75m. Quarter-finalists will pocket €2.5m, while a semi-final spot will add €4.2m to their budget.
The further teams go, the higher the prize money gets. The Europa League runners-up will collect €7m, while the champions will receive up to €13m.
MU won 5 and drew 3 group stage matches, earning 2.28 million euros before entering the knockout round. Adding bonuses for the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals, plus a fixed amount from the qualifying round, they have received a total of 13.1 million euros from UEFA so far.
The Europa League brings in a lot of money, but the "Red Devils" certainly want to aim to participate in the Champions League because Europe's number one tournament is still a gold mine for many teams.
For example, Arsenal earned €59.6 million for reaching the semi-finals. Meanwhile, despite being eliminated in the quarter-finals, Aston Villa still pocketed €45.19 million. This shows the huge financial gap between the two top leagues in Europe.
