According to our records, in recent days many families in Ho Chi Minh City have suffered from pink eye, many people have had to take time off work, many students have had to take time off school because of this disease.

Ms. TT (19 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) said she had pink eye for 5 days and had to take time off from school and work at the store to see a doctor and rest as instructed by the doctor.

"My eyes are very red and swollen, and I feel very uncomfortable. Especially when I wake up in the morning, I can't open my eyes. If I look at my phone, it hurts even more, so I can't study online or read online lessons. Luckily, it's not exam time yet," T. said.

T. had to take time off from school and work to see a doctor and get treatment for pink eye.

Similarly, Ms. PTN (50 years old, living in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City) is a garment worker. Her family has 4 members, but 3 of them have pink eye, including her and her two children. The children have to stay home from school, while she stays home from work according to the company's instructions to avoid spreading the disease.

Every morning when she woke up, Ms. N.'s eyes were covered with mucus and she could not open them. She had to use a towel soaked in saline to wet her eyes until she could open them. She bought antibiotic eye drops herself but they did not help. Her eyes became more painful and swollen, so she went to the doctor and took 10 days off work.

"I have had pink eye before, but this time the pain is worse. It feels like there are grains of sand in my eyes. Every time I close or open my eyes, I feel more uncomfortable," Ms. N. shared.

Ms. N's eyes were red and swollen, with a lot of discharge even though she had cleaned them beforehand.

Ms. Pham Giau (35 years old, in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) said: "My 6-year-old eldest child was going to school when the teacher saw that his eyes were red and runny, so she told me to pick him up early. A day later, my mother and husband also got pink eye. Luckily, up to now, my youngest child and I have not been infected."

Ms. ND (30 years old, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) said that she is a preschool teacher, teaching and picking up children. However, since September 10, she discovered that she had pink eye and had to stop teaching to avoid infecting her colleagues as well as the children in the school.

If treatment is not done properly or delayed, complications can occur.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, through monitoring data from the health sector from the beginning of 2023 to present, the number of cases of pink eye has increased compared to the same period in 2022. From the beginning of 2023 to September 5, hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City recorded 71,740 medical examinations and treatments for conjunctivitis (pink eye), an increase of 21.9% compared to the same period in 2022.

On September 14, Master, Doctor Pham Huy Vu Tung, Ophthalmology specialist, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the number of people coming to the hospital for pink eye treatment has increased sharply in recent days.

Pink eye disease has typical symptoms such as red eyes, itchy eyes, dusty feeling in the eyes, lots of discharge, watery eyes, swollen eyes, pain... In addition, the disease is also accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, mild fever, sore throat, cough, swollen lymph nodes behind the ear... If not treated properly or delayed, it can cause complications such as keratitis, corneal ulcers, blindness.

Depending on the severity of the symptoms, the disease will have different treatment methods. Most patients are treated with eye drops, others may take antibiotics, anti-allergy drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs...

Patients need to rest at home for 7-10 days. When treating pink eye at home, patients need to apply cold compresses to help reduce swelling and discomfort.

Public environments are prone to rapid spread of infection.

Doctor Tung said that recently the weather has changed from hot to rainy very quickly, causing high humidity, along with a dusty environment and polluted water sources, creating favorable conditions for viruses and bacteria to develop and become epidemics. Offices, classrooms, and public environments are places where pink eye disease spreads quickly.

To prevent pink eye, Dr. Tung advises everyone to always wash their hands with soap, use saline to wash their eyes, wear glasses when going out to limit wind and dust, avoid close contact or sharing personal items with people who are sick, and avoid crowded places. People who have recovered from the disease need to disinfect their glasses, wash their blankets, pillows, and towels to avoid re-infection.

When noticing unusual symptoms in the eyes, people should go to the hospital for timely examination and treatment to prevent complications.

Ho Chi Minh City: Do not let students with pink eye who are prescribed to stay home from school go to school

On September 12, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City issued a document on strengthening the prevention of pink eye disease in educational institutions in the area. It requires institutions to proactively implement disease prevention measures and urgently and seriously prevent the spread of pink eye disease.

As soon as a student is found to have symptoms such as mild fever, fatigue, sore throat, red eyes, swollen lymph nodes in front of the ear or under the jaw, the teacher should guide the child to go to a medical facility immediately for examination, consultation and timely treatment. Do not self-treat without the guidance of a medical professional to avoid serious complications.

At the same time, schools and educational institutions need to strengthen communication on pink eye prevention through various forms. In particular, it is necessary to communicate to teachers, staff, students and parents to create consensus on the message of not allowing students with pink eye who are prescribed to stay home from school.
