The appearance of Vietnamese movies Sister in law changed the box office landscape last week. Right from the early screenings, the project surpassed the blockbuster Mufasa: The Lion King to top the sales charts of Box Office Vietnam (independent box office monitor).
Meanwhile, the movies Prince of Bac Lieu and Lynx: Possessed still in theaters but attraction has decreased sharply.
Movie has Viet Huong and Hong Dao lead
Sister in law is a project that was introduced quite late, and its release date at the end of the year was more rushed than many other works.
However, the film still attracts attention because it is rated 16+, bringing together familiar faces such as Viet Huong, Hong Dao, Le Khanh, Dinh Y Nhung, Ngoc Trinh.
Over the past three weekends, the project earned more than VND22 billion with 258,833 tickets sold in 7,840 screenings. The film's total revenue was more than VND25 billion, with an average of 33 tickets sold per screening.
This number is not too big but still shows that the film attracts audiences. In particular, despite the fewer screenings, the opening weekend revenue of Sister in law is superior to Prince of Bac Lieu (17 billion).
Sister in law The success is thanks to a good promotional strategy, plus the appearance of a familiar cast. Many audiences are curious about the first time Viet Huong and Pink Peach collaboration on the big screen. Not to mention, this is also the project that marks Ngoc Trinh's return after her private life's turmoil and legal troubles.
The film also created a good word-of-mouth effect on social networking sites. Most of the reviews said that the film's content was close and easy to understand, and the acting of Hong Dao, Viet Huong, Le Khanh... also left a good impression on viewers.
It is likely that this will be the highest-grossing work that Khuong Ngoc has ever directed. However, the chance for the film to explode at the box office is not high, it will be difficult to reach the "hundred billion" milestone but will stop at 30-40 billion.
Coming in second place is the animated blockbuster Mufasa: The Lion King with more than 9.8 billion VND. The project was invested up to 200 million USD, playing the role of a prequel to the famous animated blockbuster. The Lion King (2019) produced by Disney.
The previous part received many bad reviews but still caused a fever with a revenue of more than 1.6 billion USD worldwide. Therefore, the producers did not hesitate to invest in the next projects, promising to expand the "universe". The Lion King to satisfy the audience's feelings.
Unfortunate, Mufasa: The Lion King not well received by critics. The film was criticized for its uncreative plot, with no significant innovation compared to the original version. The director was also not skillful in exploiting the characters to guide the viewer's emotions.
Song, prequel The Lion King still attracts audiences. International revenue is at over $122 million despite facing Sonic the Hedgehog 3 .
Prince of Bac Lieu downgrade

Face strong competition from Sister in law and Mufasa: The Lion King , an animated project from Disney, could not maintain its appeal. However, the work is also doing well in the international market, earning more than 790 million USD, ranking fourth in the list of highest-grossing films this year.
The last two positions in the top 5 belong to superhero movies. Kraven the hunter leader and Vietnamese movies Prince of Bac Lieu . Both are just over a billion and a few tickets apart.

Kraven - the chief hunter was panned by international critics for its weak script, disjointed plot, and lackluster performance by male lead Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Last week, Lynx: Possessed still sold more than 4,900 tickets over the weekend, bringing total revenue to more than 87 billion VND. The distance to the 100 billion milestone is quite far.
