Australian and Philippine soldiers march during an exercise
After observing the exercise, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said: "How we prepare for possible situations is an important aspect. Given the many events that have demonstrated the volatility of the region, this exercise and strategic cooperation between the countries is extremely important."
In a joint press conference with his Philippine counterpart Gilbert Teodoro, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said Canberra had security interests in the South China Sea and would work more closely with Manila on joint patrols, which he said would take place "soon." He said Australia, Japan and the Philippines had conducted a joint patrol last week, although a US Navy ship did not participate as planned.
