Many localities in the province have promoted the shift in crop structure, shifting a part of ineffective rice land to growing vegetables in the direction of commodities, focusing on the application of science and technology, production according to VietGAP and organic standards... From there, not only creating clean agricultural products but also contributing to creating jobs and increasing income for people.

Developing vegetables in the direction of commodities Papaya growing area of people in Hoang Dat commune (Hoang Hoa).

Recalling more than 10 years ago, Tho Hai commune (Tho Xuan) mainly grew only one crop of rice and corn, with low economic efficiency. After the harvest, many areas of land were abandoned. However, since 2017, the commune has focused on promoting and encouraging farmers to take advantage of the area of rice fields and gardens to convert to growing vegetables in the direction of goods. Vegetables were grown in each season, some households even grew vegetables out of season and on previously abandoned land to increase economic efficiency on the same unit area.

Visiting the garden of more than 500m2 of Mr. Tran Van Truong in Tho Hai commune, it is easy to see that he is a very perceptive person when taking full advantage of his land area by intercropping with squash, gourd, pumpkin, to cucumbers, tomatoes, green beans... With the method of intensive crop rotation, along with suitable climate and soil conditions, the crops always grow and develop well, bringing a good source of income for the family. According to Mr. Truong, in order for the products to be of good quality after harvest, the household owner himself needs to increase the application of nutrient-rich fertilizers with good moisture so that the vegetables can grow quickly, avoiding damage leading to spoilage. Thanks to that dedication, his family's vegetables always have fruit to sell, bringing in higher income than growing rice and corn. In April 2024, he sold over 400 kg of cucumbers, earning more than 5 million VND. He is currently continuing to take care of the next cucumber crop, which is expected to be harvested in June. At the same time, he took advantage of the abandoned land in the garden next to his house to grow tomatoes, squash, and pumpkins. In the winter and spring, he also planted cabbage and kohlrabi.

To effectively exploit land and develop agriculture towards commodities, Hoang Hoa district has shifted the crop structure, applying science and technology to production. The district focuses on propagating and guiding households to strictly follow safe vegetable production processes, bringing in high-quality vegetables to actively produce and propagate. At the same time, cooperatives and businesses have been established to develop advantageous vegetables towards commodities. Currently, the whole district has formed specialized vegetable growing areas with an area of over 3,278 hectares, of which 120 hectares have applied production according to VietGAP standards, concentrated in the communes of Hoang Thang, Hoang Luu, Hoang Giang..., with many safe vegetable cooperatives operating effectively. Products are supplied to the provincial market to serve restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and safe food stores. The application of science and technology in vegetable production helps post-harvest products have higher quality and yield, with a yield of 160 to 170 tons/ha/year, helping farmers in the district increase their income and stabilize their lives.

Up to now, the province has formed 97 vegetable production areas with a total area of about 13,500 hectares. Of which, the area of safe vegetables applying the production process according to VietGAP standards is about 4,500 hectares. To continue promoting existing advantages, the agricultural sector has oriented and had many solutions to develop vegetables in the direction of commodities associated with restructuring the agricultural sector. At the same time, it has coordinated to organize many trade promotion campaigns, connecting supply and demand of safe agricultural products to create more opportunities for cooperation and signing contracts for product consumption for people.
