Paul Merson: 'Salah doesn't get the credit he deserves'

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes Mohamed Salah's position in Premier League history is underrated.

"I feel sorry for Salah. I really think he doesn't get the credit he deserves for what he's done at Liverpool. Salah is a bit like Wayne Rooney in that respect. They're both underrated. The numbers Salah has achieved are mind-blowing. 200 goals for Liverpool, even as a right-winger, is incredible," Merson wrote on Sky Sports .

Salah has scored 14 goals and assisted eight times in 22 games in all competitions for Liverpool this season. Of these, 11 goals and seven assists have come in the Premier League. Last weekend, the Egyptian striker reached the 200-goal mark for the Anfield team when he scored in a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. Salah's brilliant form has helped Liverpool lead the Premier League after 16 rounds, one point ahead of second-placed Arsenal.

In the summer, Salah was reportedly offered a world-record deal by a Saudi Arabian club. However, Jurgen Klopp has done everything he can to convince the 31-year-old to stay. Tonight, Salah and his teammates will host rivals Man Utd - the opponents he scored twice in a 7-0 win at Anfield last season.

According to Merson, Salah is a level above any player playing in the same position in the Premier League. He said: "Everyone tells me Bukayo Saka is one of the best wingers in the world and plays in the same position as Salah. But I don't think Saka can compare to Salah. Salah at his best always makes people respect him. We talk about Jack Grealish or Phil Foden, both are good players, but the number of goals they both score together is not equal to Salah. Salah is definitely in the top five players in the world. He always scores important goals in big games. I feel like I can't describe Salah's talent enough."

According to the former Arsenal midfielder, with Salah, Liverpool has the strongest attack in the Premier League. This could be the factor that helps the Merseyside team compete for the championship this season.

"Liverpool are full of determination this season. They do not accept defeat and that is a good sign for Jurgen Klopp. The attack brings the most positive signals for Liverpool. Salah, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez, all of them are capable of scoring 10 goals or more this season," Merson assessed.
