OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company plans to launch the o3 mini model by the end of January 2025 and the full o3 later, as larger, more powerful language models can outperform existing models and attract new investments and users.
The new o3 and o3 mini models are undergoing internal safety testing and are expected to be more powerful than the previously announced o1 models, according to the regenerative AI pioneer. To attract outside researchers to participate in the testing process, OpenAI has started an open application process for those interested in testing the o3 models before their public release. The application process will close on January 10, 2025.
The move is seen as boosting the startup's competitiveness against rivals such as Alphabet Inc's Google.
In September, OpenAI announced its o1 and o1 mini AI models, which spend more time processing queries to solve difficult problems. According to the company, the o1 models are capable of reasoning on complex tasks and can solve more difficult problems than previous models in the fields of science, coding, and mathematics.
Earlier this December, Google announced Gemini 2.0, which features improved features over the previous Gemini 1.5 Pro version, as many corporations race to stay ahead of the rapidly evolving technology.
