OpenAI - an artificial intelligence (AI) startup backed by Microsoft (USA) announced on December 20 that it is testing new reasoning AI models called "o3" and "o3 mini".
The move marks a major step forward for OpenAI in its bid to compete with rivals like Google to develop smarter AI models capable of solving more complex problems, according to Reuters.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to launch an “o3 mini” version by the end of January 2025, followed by the full “o3” version. The company hopes these new AI models will outperform existing products, helping to attract more investment and new customers. The o3 models are undergoing internal safety testing. OpenAI is also inviting outside researchers to participate in testing before the official release.
With the expected launch of the o3 model, OpenAI continues to solidify its position as one of the pioneers in the AI field, while also posing a major challenge to its competitors. OpenAI started the AI race after launching ChatGPT in November 2022. The popularity of ChatGPT and related AI products helped the company raise $6.6 billion in a funding round in October 2024.
To compete, in early December, rival Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet (USA), also launched the second generation of the Gemini AI model to regain its leading position in the race to develop AI technology. OpenAI and Google are constantly improving AI models to meet the increasing expectations of users and investors.
