The drill, carried out on Thursday, involved units near the border with South Korea, KCNA said, adding that it “fulfilled important military deterrence tasks”.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the North Korean military test-fired multiple rockets and self-propelled artillery shells toward the Yellow Sea between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. local time on Thursday.
The North Korean military activity coincides with joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States. The so-called Freedom Shield exercise began on Monday with twice the number of troops participating than last year.
In a separate statement, the JCS said North Korea had also made “multiple attempts” to jam GPS signals near the border with South Korea since Tuesday. KCNA said North Korea’s artillery drills on Thursday were aimed at enhancing combat readiness.
Mr. Kim called on the military to step up preparations so that artillery units can “seize the initiative with swift and decisive strikes,” and “stressed the need to train all artillerymen of the entire army into artillery experts.”
Earlier this week, North Korean state media reported that Kim Jong Un inspected military field training at a major military base in the country's western region.
