According to the Traffic Police Department of Nghe An Province, in 2024, Nghe An Province will have 18,064 newly registered cars. On average, 50 new cars will be registered each day, an increase of nearly 4,700 cars compared to 2023, with the majority concentrated in Vinh City.

With this figure, Nghe An ranks 3rd in the country in terms of car purchases, just behind Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The fact that more and more people are buying cars while the infrastructure is not synchronized such as roads, lack of parking lots... has increased traffic congestion in Vinh City.

According to records, on Phan Boi Chau, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Le Hong Phong streets... traffic jams often occur during rush hours, weekends and on rainy days.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Nghia (residing in Hung Binh ward, Vinh city) said: "Le Hong Phong street has a lot of cars traveling, causing congestion, especially during rush hour. For many months now, this area has been renovating and repairing sidewalks, causing traffic jams to increase. The distance from work to home is not far, but at many points on the road, traffic participants have to move slowly, inch by inch," said Mr. Nghia.

Mr. Nguyen Tam Ky, Chairman of Hung Binh Ward People's Committee, said that the area where Le Hong Phong Street intersects with Nguyen Van Cu Street is having its sidewalks upgraded and the road widened to prevent traffic congestion.

"We had to move the electric poles and put the entire network underground. This area was originally planned to be completed before Tet, but it is still not finished," said Mr. Ky.

The Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Binh Ward said that traffic jams occur on rainy days and weekends, but on normal days, traffic jams only last for a short time, after which traffic flows normally.

In addition to widening the road, authorities must also mobilize forces to guide traffic participants to stay in the correct lane.

"There are 6 apartment buildings in the ward, but none of them have parking lots, so people living in the apartment buildings park their cars in a very messy way," said Mr. Nguyen Tam Ky.

Speaking to VietNamNet reporters, a representative of the Vinh City People's Committee said that in the past, the Nghe An Provincial People's Committee has not allowed the construction of additional apartment buildings in the central area of Vinh City. Regarding traffic congestion, the Vinh City People's Committee has implemented many solutions, such as expanding intersections and existing roads.

Many renovation, upgrading and new construction investment projects have been implemented and gradually completed. However, currently, some key transport projects are in the investment preparation stage, and the public transport system is not yet synchronized to keep up with the speed of urbanization.

To solve the "problem" of traffic jams, Vinh City will review and adjust the city's general planning (according to the expanded administrative boundaries), focusing on completing the framework infrastructure system, public transport in sync with the urban development orientation; strictly managing the planning indicators of the central urban area.

"The city is focusing on building key traffic routes, connecting the central urban area and the suburbs, key projects to create momentum for the development of new urban areas. Review and adjust appropriately routes, intersections, and auxiliary systems.

In addition, strictly manage the construction and development of new urban areas, functional areas with synchronous regional infrastructure, complete the public transport system, static traffic (parking lots, parking bays, bus stop bays, etc.)", said a representative of Vinh City People's Committee.

A representative of the Vinh City People's Committee said that the Nghe An Provincial People's Committee is assigning the Department of Construction to preside over and organize the planning to adjust the general planning of Vinh City, expanding training centers and schools in the inner city to more remote areas to disperse the population and reduce pressure on traffic infrastructure in the center.

In recent years, based on the assessment of traffic volume on the routes, review, research, and forecast of traffic density, comparing with the current status and approved planning, Vinh City has adjusted the size of sidewalks and roads on a number of routes (Le Hong Phong Street, extended Le Mao Street).

Also according to the representative of Vinh City People's Committee, in recent times, the city has invested in and expanded roads by narrowing sidewalks and widening roads to improve urban areas and avoid traffic congestion. In particular, it has expanded lanes at intersections.

“Vinh City has been implementing the expansion of lanes at intersections such as Nguyen Van Cu for hundreds of years. However, the expansion of lanes at intersections such as Nguyen Van Cu will only be completed around 2024. The expansion of roads at intersections has solved traffic congestion and significantly reduced traffic jams,” added a representative of Vinh City People’s Committee.
