Binh Phuoc has many advantages in developing the honey bee industry, however, beekeepers are always uncertain because of market dependence.
The honey market is forecast to continue to face difficulties as export bottlenecks have not been resolved. In the 2024 beekeeping season, Mr. Pham Van Tiep in Quarter 3, Tien Thanh Ward, Dong Xoai City proactively reduced his bee herd to avoid risks in product prices and output. However, with the selling price of 18,000 VND/kg of honey maintained for the past 2 years, Mr. Tiep and other beekeepers may continue to suffer losses.
Mr. Tiep said: Maintaining a bee colony costs a lot of money in terms of food such as sugar, flour... With the current selling price of 18,000 VND/kg, less than 1kg of sugar, beekeepers face many difficulties; they have to sell for more than 30,000 VND/kg to make a profit.
Domestic consumption demand is not high while exported honey is subject to very high anti-dumping tax rates, from 60-125% from import markets. Therefore, production and processing activities of the honey industry are forecasted to still face many difficulties in the coming time.
Mr. Vu Tien Hoang, owner of Song Be Honey in Tien Thanh Ward, said: The domestic demand for honey is not high, beekeepers, businesses, purchasing, processing and packaging facilities mainly rely on the export market. We hope that the authorities will soon have solutions to remove bottlenecks in the export market, promptly supporting beekeepers and businesses to overcome the current difficult period.
“Although the beekeeping industry in Binh Phuoc is very developed, it is mostly spontaneous. There needs to be a connection between beekeepers and purchasing enterprises, in which the authorities play an important role in management, connecting supply and demand, orienting the market, creating conditions for beekeepers to access preferential capital for sustainable development,” Mr. Hoang Van Quang in Quarter 3, Tien Thanh Ward proposed.
Beekeepers, businesses, and honey processing and packaging facilities in the province are entering the new harvesting season with many worries due to falling prices.
With a very large area of industrial crops and favorable climate conditions, the province currently has about 500 honey beekeeping households and a large number of households from other provinces and cities. Along with the efforts of businesses in finding and building alternative markets, market orientation, building linkage chains, and supporting resources from functional sectors are essential for sustainable honey beekeeping development, contributing to increasing the competitive strength of Binh Phuoc agricultural products in the integration process.
