Digging ponds to store water, investing in pump systems, irrigation pipes... are solutions that farmers in Vu Quang (Ha Tinh) are actively implementing to "cut the drought" for more than 2,600 hectares of oranges during the dry season.
While quickly pulling the water pipe to irrigate his family's more than 1 hectare of oranges, Mr. Nguyen Van Minh (village 5, Tho Dien commune) said: "This year, the hot weather has lasted for a long time with high temperatures, causing the oranges to dry out very quickly. To protect the oranges from the heat, since the beginning of the dry season, I have invested in 2 large capacity water pumps and an irrigation system of more than 200m long with a total cost of nearly 8 million VND to facilitate the care of the oranges."
Every day, Mr. Minh always wakes up early in the morning to pump water to irrigate the orange garden. According to Mr. Minh, this is the time when the oranges are in the fruiting stage, so providing water to the trees is very important.
Mr. Minh's family also invested more than 30 million VND to rent a pond digging machine to store water, proactively providing irrigation water during prolonged hot weather.
Mr. Minh said: Thanks to proactively implementing early heat-resistant measures and focusing on care, his family's more than 1 hectare of oranges is always green and the fruit grows evenly. This year, the oranges are bearing fruit, and the family is expecting a bumper crop.
Not only Mr. Minh's family, to cope with the prolonged hot weather, at this time, Mr. Vo Van Son (village 5, Tho Dien commune) is also focusing on taking care of and nurturing the fruit for more than 1 hectare of oranges of his family. In addition to regular watering every morning, Mr. Minh also uses grass and dry plants to cover the roots, helping the trees have the necessary moisture.
Mr. Son said: Every year, growing oranges brings in more than 200 million VND to the family. To keep the orange trees growing steadily and overcoming the hot season, I always closely monitor the development process. I regularly clean the grass around the base or prune deep and dry branches. Hopefully, with careful care, this orange season will be another bumper crop.
Because he is watered regularly, Mr. Son's orange garden is always green and full of life.
According to many people, this year, the flowering and fruiting rate of oranges is higher than last year, so special attention is paid to technical care to have a successful crop.
Not applying automatic irrigation technology, drip irrigation like other orange growing models in the area, every day, Mr. Doan Quoc Hoai's family (village 1, Quang Tho commune) directly uses a hose to pull up the hill to water the orange garden of more than 3 hectares, with more than 1,500 trees. According to Mr. Hoai, using a hose to water will help the oranges have enough and even water. Besides, this method will help weeding and fertilizing not get stuck in the irrigation system.
In addition to taking care of the orange trees that have already been harvested, this year, Mr. Hoai has planted nearly 200 new orange trees. Therefore, he also pays special attention to taking care of the young trees.
Thanks to proactive measures to care for trees and fruit for oranges, more than 2,600 hectares of oranges in Vu Quang district are growing well, promising a successful crop.
Faced with the prolonged heat, the department has directed localities to actively guide people to implement heat-resistant measures for more than 2,600 hectares of oranges, such as: mulching the roots of trees, investing in irrigation systems; using water economically, reasonably regulating irrigation water sources from dams, rivers and streams or investing in digging ponds to store water. Thanks to the synchronous implementation of solutions, up to now, the orange areas in the area are growing well, the fruits are large and even, and do not dry out.
