TPO – Melon growers in Ha Tinh are in the main harvest season of cantaloupe and young melons. This year, the weather is favorable, the melons grow well, and the high yield has helped people have a good income.
These days, the weather in Ha Tinh is extremely hot. This is also the time when dozens of households growing young melons, cantaloupes, etc. in Cam Son commune, Cam Xuyen district are busy entering the main crop season. |
Cam Son commune currently has more than 100 households growing young melons and cantaloupes with an area of over 11 hectares. |
This year, Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan (Phuc Son village, Cam Son commune) grows young melons and pear melons on an area of 7 sao of land. "The weather is favorable, so at this time, each day my family harvests 200 kg of young melons and 0.5 kg of pear melons. Although the price of melons is not as high as in previous years, it still brings a good income," Ms. Loan said. |
According to locals, the main melon season starts in early April and lasts for several months. Melons are heat-resistant, so if the weather is hot, the plants will have a high fruit set rate and produce fruit continuously. |
Because the melons grow quickly, people have to pick them every day. If the fruit is left to ripen, it will have many unusable seeds. |
Currently, the price of melons bought at the garden is 25,000 VND/kg; young melons are 6,000 VND/kg. On average, for every 5 sao of melons, each crop season, people can earn 30-40 million VND. |
The leader of Cam Son Commune People's Committee said that this year the weather was favorable, so the local melon growers were excited because the melon crop was good. Growing melons gives a yield 5 times higher than rice, so in recent years, many households in the commune have expanded their planting area. The locality also supported the farmers in taking care of the plants and preventing pests from destroying the crop. |
Young melons can be processed into many delicious dishes such as pickles, dried melons or bought by ships as food reserves before going to sea. |
