In 2025, high-end Android smartphones will typically receive at least a few years of OS updates and security patches. Even budget smartphones are guaranteed at least one OS upgrade.
As consumers hold onto their devices for longer, timely software updates and security patches have become a key factor in smartphone purchasing decisions. While not all brands are equally committed to software support, some have stepped up their update policies, even surpassing Apple.
The Pixel line is currently the leader in Android software support. With the Pixel 8, Google is committing to seven years of Android OS updates, security patches, and features—a level of support that even Apple has a hard time matching.
In particular, Google has extended the update support period for older models like the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7, with an additional 2 years of Android updates. Thanks to timely and consistent deployment, Pixel smartphones remain the top choice for users looking for long-term software support.
Apple
Apple has long been considered the standard when it comes to software updates. Even in the early days of Android, Apple regularly released at least three major OS updates for its devices. When the iPhone 6 came out, five years of updates became the norm.
However, Apple has never explicitly announced the update timeline for its phones. Some devices may get updates for longer than expected, like the iPhone 6s, which launched with iOS 9 and continued to receive updates until iOS 15. Recently, under pressure from UK regulations, Apple confirmed that the iPhone 15 Pro would get at least five years of updates, although that’s just the minimum. In fact, Apple often goes beyond this commitment, supporting older models as long as there are no hardware limitations that affect performance.
Samsung
Samsung and Google are neck and neck when it comes to update commitments for their flagship products. Samsung has committed to providing seven years of OS upgrades and security patches for its Galaxy S24 series and newer devices, including the Galaxy Z Flip, Z Fold, and Tab S10. And not just its premium products, some of its budget Galaxy A series models are also guaranteed to receive six years of updates, which is a step up from many rival brands.
Importantly, Samsung releases updates promptly, for both high-end and budget smartphones, making the brand a top choice for those interested in software updates.
Fairphone
Fairphone has built its brand on sustainability and long-term software support. The Fairphone 2, launched in 2015, has received updates for over seven years, a rare feat in the Android world. The newer Fairphone 5 offers five years of OS updates and eight years of security patches. The company has even pledged to try to extend that to 10 years of security updates if possible.
However, Fairphone's update schedule isn't as stable as other brands, with inconsistent OS releases and updates, despite the fairly long support period.
