In a statement on February 1, Jacinta Delhaize, a lecturer at the University of Cape Town (South Africa), who led the research, emphasized that this latest discovery about the galaxy by the MeerKAT telescope has extraordinary significance.
The MeerKAT telescope, located in the Karoo region of South Africa, consists of 64 radio dishes and is operated by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO). It is a precursor project to the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), the world's largest telescope, which is expected to begin operations in 2028.
SKA is a network of thousands of radio antennas of various types and sizes, located at several locations in Western Australia and South Africa. This major international scientific project is funded, built and operated by more than 10 countries.
