Nurturing the teaching profession
Since childhood, Luong Thi Thuy - a student at Nghe An Province's Ethnic Boarding High School - has witnessed the situation of young people in the village who, after finishing junior high school or high school, quit school to work for hire, get married early, and spend all year around the fields and villages, so they have no opportunity to develop themselves. Thuy was not willing to follow the beaten path like her older siblings in the village. She was aware that she had to study and stick to her studies to change her life. The lectures of her teachers ignited Thuy's dream of becoming a teacher.
Thuy recalls: “I live in a poor village, and when I go to school, my teachers teach me many new and interesting things. There are also many stories in the newspapers about teachers from the lowlands who spend their youth in the village to teach students in disadvantaged areas, which makes me touched and admire. Therefore, I want to become a teacher, standing on the podium to impart knowledge, helping students in the village to form their dreams and ambitions.”
Thanks to that motivation, during 12 years of high school, Thuy always tried her best to study and practice. In the 2024 High School Graduation Exam, she scored 29 points and became the valedictorian of block C00 (Literature 9.25, History 9.75, Geography 10) of Nghe An Provincial Ethnic Minority High School and became a new student of History Pedagogy, Hanoi National University of Education.
At the same time, receiving early admission information from 5 major universities including: Foreign Language University (Hanoi National University), Hanoi National University of Education, Foreign Trade University, Diplomatic Academy, Hanoi Law University, however, Dinh Thi Bich Ngoc - Luong Van Tuy High School for the Gifted (Ninh Binh), "double" valedictorian at the 2024 High School Graduation Exam (national valedictorian and valedictorian of block C00 in Ninh Binh province with 29.75 points) decided to choose English Pedagogy, Foreign Language University (Hanoi National University).
Ngoc has had the dream of becoming a teacher since the summer of 11th grade, when she participated in a project to teach English to children at the Ninh Binh Social Protection Center. Bich Ngoc said: “I am luckier than the children at the Center because since birth, my parents have cared for me, taken care of me, and given me a full education to develop my passion, interests, and strengths. Thanks to that, I was exposed to English early, so the learning and communication process is more favorable.”
After finishing her time teaching English at the Ninh Binh Social Protection Center, Bich Ngoc realized that many of her peers and children did not have the opportunity to be exposed to this language. With the desire to do something to help many people, the valedictorian determined to become a foreign language teacher in the future.
“Another reason why I chose Pedagogy is that during my high school years, my teachers always created favorable conditions and inspired me to make all my dreams come true. They did not hesitate to sit for hours to explain and share difficult knowledge; they even always listened to us during the final exam review period even though they were very tired. If they were not dedicated teachers, devoted to their students, it would be difficult to understand and sympathize with them like that,” Bich Ngoc added.

Good news
Educational innovation requires increasingly high human resources. Therefore, one of the important things to attract talented people to choose the Pedagogy industry is the treatment and employment policies.
Mr. Nguyen Van Chap - Principal of Tay Ha Noi Primary and Secondary School (Hanoi) said: "Recently, the press has reported that many top students of all grades in the High School Graduation Exam chose to study Pedagogy, which is an encouraging sign. From a management perspective, everyone wants to have a good team to serve teaching. If a school has a team of dedicated and capable teachers, the quality of education will certainly make great strides."
According to Mr. Chap, the positive changes in the enrollment of Pedagogy majors in recent times are thanks to the State and the Education sector having many policies to attract talented people. Specifically: Policies to support tuition fees, living expenses, scholarships, improve output quality, jobs... have attracted students with good abilities.
In addition, policies that encourage people with degrees or experience in other fields to switch to the Pedagogy industry also bring diversity and richness in knowledge and teaching methods. Training facilities also create favorable conditions for students and teachers to access modern learning and practice environments, contributing to improving professional skills.
Sharing the same view, Dr. Bui Hong Quan - Head of the Department of Preschool Education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education said: "The valedictorians choosing the Pedagogy major show that the role and position of the major are increasingly being paid attention to by society. The Party's policies and the State's policies have impacted the education sector, taking better care of teachers' lives. This shows the importance of pedagogical human resources not only in education but also in the whole country."
From another perspective, the State's policies under Decree 116/2020/ND-CP are very important. In fact, many students choose Pedagogy not only out of passion but also to reduce the burden of study costs for their families. Thanks to financial support, many students focus on studying, so they are both top students in the entrance exam and top students in the graduation exam; the opportunities for employment, further study and development are great.
The education sector not only needs attractive policies but also support, incentives, and conditions for teachers to develop comprehensively and make long-term contributions. I believe that with the synchronization and consistency of policies, we can achieve the goal of improving the quality of comprehensive education, thereby contributing to building a generation of students with outstanding knowledge and skills, ready to integrate into the international environment. - Mr. Nguyen Van Chap (Principal of Tay Ha Noi Primary and Secondary School)
