(Dan Tri) - Truong Hong Khanh, a 12th grade student majoring in Russian at Thai Nguyen High School for the Gifted, won the highest score in Russian at the national excellent student exam for high school cultural subjects in the 2024-2025 school year.

With 17.7 points, Truong Hong Khanh won first prize in Russian and was also the person with the highest score nationwide. This was Khanh's second time participating in a national competition.

In grade 11, Khanh took the exam to advance his level and won second prize.

Three years ago, Khanh was admitted as valedictorian to the Russian class at Thai Nguyen High School for the Gifted. For three consecutive years, Khanh won first prize in the provincial competition for excellent students in Russian. Last year, Khanh won a silver medal in Russian at the competition for excellent students in the coastal and northern delta regions.

However, the path of studying and taking exams for the San Diu boy was not always smooth.

Khanh originally set his goal to study in an English major. When submitting his application, in the second choice, Khanh wrote "Russian major" just because it sounded "strange". But Khanh failed the English major. Russian major became the only choice. Khanh regretted and hesitated, whether he should study or not.

In the end, the male student decided to continue studying. Like most students in the Russian class at that time, Khanh did not know a word of Russian. He did not even bother to open his book to read the lesson first as usual. However, in the first Russian class, as soon as the teacher taught the alphabet, the strange, new language immediately attracted Khanh.

"The Russian alphabet is very different from the languages I've known before. Because it's a different writing system. Because it's different, I'm interested, want to explore and conquer it," Khanh said.

The difficulty for Khanh is that there are very few Russian learning materials online. Khanh mainly relies on the materials provided by teachers. He also tries to search for the few Russian Youtube channels and reads newspapers. However, just by learning everything taught by teachers, Khanh won second place in the national exam when he advanced from grade 11.

This year, Khanh took the exam again with the goal of improving her ranking. On the day the results were announced, Khanh was not the first person to see her score. Her teacher knew her score first and informed her parents. Her classmates informed her.

"When I heard the announcement, I didn't react at all, my face was expressionless. My friend asked me why I didn't feel happy when I won first prize. Actually, I was so happy, so happy that I froze," Khanh joked.

From reluctantly majoring in Russian, Russian is now Khanh's passion. He loves Russian culture and cuisine and wishes to study abroad in Russia. Khanh has applied for a Russian agreement scholarship and enrolled in the language major. His goal is to become a Russian teacher in the future.

Along with studying Russian, Khanh is still improving his English. He has an IELTS 7.5 certificate and is still continuing to study on his own.

Sharing about his student, Mr. Nguyen Binh Minh, head of the Russian - French - Chinese group, Thai Nguyen High School for the Gifted, and also Khanh's homeroom teacher, said: "Truong Hong Khanh is a very hard-working student, always striving to improve.

This is shown in the fact that in grade 11, I won second prize in the national excellent student competition, which allowed me to reserve my university entrance results, but I still tried my best to achieve higher results in grade 12.

Khanh has a calm personality, even a little quiet, very modest and always conscious of learning, even neat handwriting. He is also a student with a good sense of organization and discipline, enthusiastic in all group activities and is loved by his classmates.

The fact that he won first prize in the national competition for excellent students was not a big surprise to me because when Khanh took the exam, the teacher and student tried to improve themselves to reach a higher goal."
