Many people who see men who collect garbage without being paid show respect and affection and often humorously call them "people who eat at home but carry the prison and the village".
Diligently picking up trash to clean the ocean
Early one morning in mid-February 2024, while the people of My Hoa coastal village were still asleep, 9 men from the sea turtle and coral protection team of Nui Chua National Park wore gloves, sacks, bamboo baskets... and went to My Hoa beach to start picking up trash.
While nimbly picking up pieces of trash pushed by the wind to the shore, Mr. Nguyen Song Hy (member of the sea turtle and coral protection team) said that the group has been collecting trash since 2009.
"Doing small things that contribute to cleaning up the marine environment in my hometown where I was born and raised makes me feel very happy" - Mr. Hy confided.
Having done this "busybody" job for over 10 years, Mr. Le Rang (58 years old, member of the sea turtle and coral protection team) shared: "From my small work, many local people have become more aware of protecting the environment, contributing to attracting domestic and international tourists to My Hoa coastal village, which is famous as a gathering place for kite surfing "adventurers".
Mr. Pham Anh Dung - deputy head of the forest and marine resources conservation department of Nui Chua National Park - smiled and said: "Although this is an unpaid job, with a heart for the sea and not wanting the beauty of the sea to be destroyed by trash, these 9 men volunteered to pick up trash whenever they had free time."
Going back to Vinh Hy Bay in Vinh Hy village (Vinh Hai commune, Ninh Hai district), we continued to hear the story of more than 3 years of "unpaid" garbage collection by the group "Vinh Hy green - clean - beautiful".
The garbage collection work is maintained and carried out regularly by the group members on weekdays. The garbage collection area is along the sea embankment of Vinh Hy village, the park, the inner-village roads and the coastal road Vinh Hy - Binh Tien (section through Vinh Hy village).
In addition to picking up trash in the village, members also picked up trash at some tourist spots in Vinh Hy Bay such as Lang Ba beach, Phu beach, Coc beach...
While diligently picking up each bag of trash washed ashore by the waves, Chau Thanh Hong - the team leader - said: "Although the work is unpaid, all members do their best. When tourists come here and praise Vinh Hy Bay for its cleanliness and beauty, we are very happy and use that as motivation to continue the journey."
According to Mr. Hong, after seeing the effectiveness of the group, the local people supported and joined hands to protect the environment. At one point, 30 people, students, etc. joined the group to pick up trash.
Changing people's awareness
As a person who is passionate about adventure tourism in Vinh Hy Bay, Ms. Pham Thi Hong Thuy (in Ho Chi Minh City) said: "When I came to Vinh Hy Bay, I was very surprised and impressed to see many people volunteering to pick up trash and remind each other to protect the environment."
Mr. Nguyen Viet Kinh Luan - Vice Chairman of Vinh Hai Commune People's Committee - said that the practical work of the sea turtle and coral protection team of Nui Chua National Park and the group "Vinh Hy green - clean - beautiful" has changed people's awareness, significantly reducing the situation of littering.
The good news is that the amount of garbage on the shore and under the water in Vinh Hy Bay has decreased significantly compared to before. The sea has become clean and beautiful, ensuring environmental hygiene and safety for tourists and people.
"In the coming time, the locality will replicate this model so that everyone can join hands to protect the environment. Only then can we attract more and more tourists to the locality," said Mr. Luan.
