Doing the wrong type and method of argumentation can cause candidates to lose a lot of points when taking the Literature exam for grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Vo Kim Bao, a Literature teacher at Nguyen Du Secondary School in Ho Chi Minh City, said that the Literature exam for 10th grade admission in Ho Chi Minh City aims to test students' abilities and limit memorization. Therefore, students need to have a firm grasp of the basic knowledge according to the program to apply.

When grading, the content of skills, qualities, and abilities has a high score scale. Therefore, instead of depending on sample essays, students need to regularly practice writing skills, reading comprehension, analyzing topics, relating to other works on the same topic, or relating to real life to draw conclusions and assessments on a specific issue.

To avoid losing points in the Literature exam for grade 10, students should not change the order of questions and answers, but should do each question because the questions are arranged in order from easy to difficult. In particular, the previous question is a suggestion for the next question. If students understand this, doing the test will be simpler.

In addition, you do not need to feel pressured to write beautifully, the most important thing is to write correctly to get good marks.

Another thing to note is that students should allocate time appropriately for each question. They should bring a watch into the exam room to keep track of time during the test. Candidates should spend 20 minutes on the Reading - Comprehension section, 40 minutes on the Social Essay section and 60 minutes on the Literary Essay section.

Candidates should not write the entire essay on scratch paper. They can use scratch paper to write down keywords for the answers, and when outlining, they should only write keywords, not long sentences or paragraphs, which is a waste of time. Outlining on scratch paper helps to write coherently, with connections, without missing ideas, and avoid having to write additional notes at the end of the essay or in the margins.

Here are notes from teacher Vo Kim Bao on each specific part of the 10th grade Literature exam in Ho Chi Minh City:

In the Reading - Comprehension section, With exercises such as identifying introductory words, isolated elements, and rhetorical devices, students only answer which elements and devices and often forget to cite the details. The answer may be correct, but it needs to be clearly written and expressed through which details. Only then will the answer be given the highest score.

In the paragraph writing section, students often do not pay attention to the limit of the question. They need to pay attention to the limit given by the question, whether it is the number of lines or the number of sentences. A sentence can be written in multiple lines. If the question is not read carefully, students can write too many lines and lose points. The first sentence in the paragraph should answer the question of the question. The following sentences should explain and clarify the main idea stated first.

For the Social Essay , students need to read the topic carefully to determine whether the essay is about an event or phenomenon in life or an ideological or moral issue. Essays that use the wrong method or genre will be heavily deducted points.

Writing an essay that is too long for the question limit is often overlooked by the examiner, without deducting points, but students will waste a lot of time, leading to not having much time left for question 3. The question usually only requires writing a short essay of about one page. Students should ensure this limit, not writing more than 1.5 pages.

When writing an essay, students must write an introduction, body, and conclusion. The body should be presented in paragraphs, each paragraph presenting a specific content, with close links between paragraphs.

If the question gives multiple choices, students need to consider carefully when choosing a topic. Students should choose the topic that they can write best.

In the Literary Essay section, the topic is usually limited to a few stanzas or a part of the story, and does not require analysis of the entire work. Therefore, if the introduction only stops at introducing the work without introducing the content required for analysis, points will be lost.

After writing the introduction, students need to write a short paragraph to introduce the work in general before analyzing the ideas. That paragraph usually includes content such as: introducing the author's style, career, the context of the work's creation, and summarizing the story.

Paragraphs that develop an argument should have a clear topic sentence. Topic sentences should be placed at the beginning of the paragraph, with linking sentences used between paragraphs. When analyzing an argument, specific evidence should be provided.

In addition, when doing the test, students need to avoid paraphrasing poems and rambling stories. Making this mistake will result in a heavy deduction of points.

The entrance exam for public grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City will take place on June 6 and 7 with three subjects: Math, Literature (120 minutes) and Foreign Language (90 minutes). Students taking the exam for specialized grade 10 or integrated English program will take additional specialized and integrated subjects. About 18,800 students out of more than 96,000 candidates will fail the public grade 10 exam. They can continue studying at private schools, continuing education centers, and vocational schools.
