As of February 12th, Ha Giang is the first locality nationwide to choose History and Geography as the third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam to public high schools in 2025-2026.
Accordingly, the Department of Education and Training of Ha Giang province has selected three subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam in the 2025-2026 school year: Mathematics, Literature, and History - Geography.
Candidates applying to specialized high schools will take exams in four subjects: Mathematics, Literature, History and Geography, and a specialized subject. The exam content is designed to select students with aptitude in that specialized subject.
The Department of Education and Training requires educational institutions to implement the school's plan, consolidating and reviewing material for 9th-grade students to participate in the exam in a suitable and effective manner.
To date, at least 25 provinces and cities have announced or are planning a third subject. Except for Vinh Phuc and Ha Giang, all other provinces have chosen a foreign language or English.

In the regulations for admission to junior and senior high schools from 2025, issued in early January 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training clearly stipulates that the entrance exam for grade 10 will consist of two compulsory subjects: Mathematics and Literature, and a third subject (or a combined test). This subject will be chosen by the Department of Education and Training from subjects assessed by scores, but the same subject cannot be chosen for more than three consecutive years.
Provinces and cities may announce the third exam subject after the end of the first semester, but no later than March 31st each year. The content of the 10th grade entrance exam is based on the junior high school general education program, mainly focusing on grade 9. The time allotted for the Literature exam is 120 minutes, Mathematics 90 minutes, the third subject 60 or 90 minutes, and the combined subject exam 90 or 120 minutes.
For high schools under the Ministry of Education and Training, universities, colleges, and research institutes that organize their own entrance exams, the third subject or a combined test of the remaining subjects will be selected by the Ministry of Education and Training, the university, college, or research institute directly managing them.
