Graduated from the Ship Control major in 2015, Hoang Ngoc Chung was assigned to operate fishing control ships, belonging to the Vietnam Fisheries Control, a specialized force under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Chung said that in addition to operating the ship, transporting delegates to visit Truong Sa archipelago and DK1 platform, he and his fellow crew members also participated in rescuing many fishing boats of fishermen in distress at sea, creating a solid foundation for fishermen to go out to sea.
The sea is now gentle and calm, but the story of rescuing fishermen in distress during a storm years ago makes the captain of the KN 390 ship, Hoang Ngoc Chung, emotional every time he remembers it.
It was winter 2021.
The weather at sea was getting worse and worse. The big white-capped waves were forming giant walls of water, rushing towards Chung, making his heart burn like fire. A few hours earlier, he had received orders from the Command Center about a fishing boat with engine failure, in danger of capsizing far out at sea.
Recalling that day, Hoang Ngoc Chung recalled: “Receiving orders from the Command Center, we immediately organized a rescue operation for the fishing boat. The waves and winds were so strong that even though we were used to sailing, many of us still got seasick. Despite that, the whole team focused on making ropes and implementing plans to approach and rescue the ship in distress.”
According to Captain Chung, the situation at that time was very dangerous. The towing process required a large rope, ensuring it was sturdy. The movements required quickness and precise timing. The rope's tightening force was extremely strong. If the rope was not tightened properly, fingers or even hands could be severed. Large waves crashed into the hull of the ship, causing it to drift and the steering angle to be bent. If the approach was not precise, the ship would collide with the fishing boat.
After many approaches and many solutions, the team was able to connect the rope to the fishing boat and help the fishermen get on board safely. When the fishermen got on the rescue boat, their hands were red and swollen from holding the rope. The weather was below 10 degrees Celsius but sweat was still pouring out.
