To protect health during Tet, especially for people with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, people can refer to the methods and tips to cope when they have symptoms of the disease below.

According to specialist doctor 2 Nguyen Thi Diem Huong, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - branch 3, some diseases are likely to become worse during and after Tet due to disrupted lifestyle and nutrition, specifically:

Hyperglycemia

Symptoms: Fast hunger, thirst, frequent urination at night, fatigue; may be accompanied by symptoms of blurred vision, numbness in limbs, restlessness, feeling of shortness of breath, anxiety...

Treatment: Drink plenty of water to eliminate excess blood sugar through urine. Patients with kidney failure or heart failure should not use this method.

Drink 1 more cup of green tea (can add 2-3 slices of ginger) every day.

Walk for 30-60 minutes to promote glucose utilization.

Adjust your diet and monitor your blood sugar at home. Visit a medical facility early if your condition is not under control or shows signs of increasing.

Hypertension

If systolic blood pressure is above 140 mmHg but below 160 mmHg: Patients can monitor at home, limit movement, mainly rest, and need to continue taking blood pressure medication during the day according to the prescription. Limit salty foods, do not smoke, avoid anxiety... to stabilize blood pressure. If it is still abnormal, you should go back for a check-up soon so that the doctor can adjust the medication accordingly.

If systolic blood pressure is higher than 160 mmHg: The patient needs to use blood pressure lowering medication available at home that has been consulted with a doctor in advance. During this time, the patient needs to rest and monitor blood pressure. In case blood pressure is still high or there is no immediate blood pressure control medication, the patient should be taken to the hospital as soon as possible.

If systolic blood pressure is higher than 180 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure is higher than 120 mmHg, accompanied by signs of severe headache, visual disturbances, shortness of breath, chest pain or abnormal neurological signs..., the patient should be taken immediately to the nearest medical facility. While waiting for the emergency to arrive, let the patient sit or lie in a comfortable position, with the head higher than the heart, usually in a semi-sitting position; at the same time, loosen clothing, belts, ties...

People with high blood pressure should monitor their blood pressure regularly.

Angina pectoris

Symptoms: The patient feels chest tightness as if something is squeezing or pressing behind the sternum or on the side of the heart.

Pain spreads to both shoulders, up both sides of the lower jaw to the inside of the left arm, up to the neck.

In atypical cases, the pain appears on the right side, in the epigastric region, which is sometimes mistaken for acute stomach pain. Sometimes there is pain in the shoulder, wrist and neck.

Feeling restless, panicked, scared.

The pain lasts from a few seconds to 10 to 15 minutes. Normally, the pain goes away very quickly and the patient can walk normally, but if they exert themselves, the pain recurs.

Treatment: When in pain, the patient needs to stop all movement, lie still or sit in a semi-sitting position, avoid moving, usually just resting like that can relieve the pain. If the pain lasts more than 20 minutes, be alert because it may be a heart attack, need to go to the hospital immediately.

“During Tet, people with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases should maintain a regular diet, exercise, and rest, and especially adhere to the medication regimen prescribed by their doctor. If you go on a long trip or vacation, you need to prepare and take your medication in full to prevent possible complications,” Dr. Diem Huong noted.
