Kites of all colors and shapes were released one after another into the deep blue sky. There were kites shaped like phoenixes, colorful butterflies, and even fluttering sharks and carps. There were also simple “handmade” kites made of newspaper but still filled with the joy of childhood.
Sitting there, absentmindedly watching the kite floating in the air, I heard a couple of parents say to each other: "Bring your kids here so they can learn about childhood games, because all day long on the phone and computer makes me feel sluggish."
Another woman added: “That’s right, kids nowadays lack exercise, bringing them out here allows them to run and jump, and breathe fresh air.” Nearby, several young people were laughing and joking, competing to pull the kite strings, pointing to see whose kite could fly the highest.
Not only appealing to children, this game also attracts adults. Fathers and mothers seem to find their childhood again in each kite filled with wind. They remember the old days, a simple paper kite was enough to bring joy throughout the summer.
At that time, making a kite was not a simple task. The bamboo had to be carefully whittled, the paper had to be pasted with cold rice, and then it had to wait for windy afternoons before it could be flown. Those memories are still intact, so every time I see a kite flying, the emotions come flooding back as if it were just yesterday.
Uncle Nguyen Van Thong (Long Thanh Trung ward, Hoa Thanh town) sat next to his grandson, his eyes following the kites flying in the sky, his heart filled with nostalgia as he recalled: “In the past, there weren’t many games like now, every afternoon we would go out to the fields to fly kites. The kites flew high, one day the wind was so strong that the kite string broke and flew away, it was a real pity but also a lot of fun. Seeing the kids playing like that made me happy too, childhood was so beautiful.”
Now, looking at the children playing happily, my heart also flutters, as if seeing a part of the beautiful childhood memories. Watching the kites filled with wind in the afternoon sky, I also suddenly remember the days when I was a child, every summer afternoon, the children in the neighborhood called each other to go to the fields.
Kites of all shapes and sizes, sometimes made from old newspapers, with strings hastily found in the house, still flutter high, carrying with them the innocent joy of childhood.
Back then, no one had beautiful or expensive kites like today, but the joy of seeing your kite fly high, above your friends was enough to make you cheer with joy.
Some children were so busy looking up at the sky that they tripped and fell into the rice field, some were so busy chasing kites that they forgot about mealtime. And so, the kites grew up with the children of that day, carrying with them their purest dreams.
Someone once said, flying a kite is like life. If you want your kite to fly high, you have to know how to adjust the string in your hand, so that it is not too tight, not too loose. If you pull it too tight, the string will break and the kite will fly away. If you let it loose, the kite will wobble, lose control and fall.
The childhood kite is not simply a game, but also a lesson about balance, about how to hold on and let go in life. The children who are excitedly running around the field this afternoon probably do not fully understand these things. Then one day, when they grow up, the image of the kite soaring in the afternoon sky will become a beautiful memory, reminding them of carefree days and cherished dreams.
Kite flying is now not only a game, but also an opportunity for people to get closer and connect with each other. It is also a great way to help children find simple, meaningful joy in the midst of modern life full of pressure from studying and taking exams.
The afternoon gradually fell, the gentle golden sunlight spread across the fields. The kites filled with wind were tirelessly flying, leaving behind the noise of the city. Looking up from the ground, the kites were small in the vast sky, but in each person's heart, the memories of childhood were even clearer, as if just by reaching out, they could touch those carefree, innocent days of years past.
And so, the kites in the afternoon sky decorate the Tay Ninh sky, carrying dreams and simple, warm joys, beautifying the childhood memories of many generations.
