Durian crop opening in 2025: Building growing area codes for development

Department of Agriculture and Environment opens durian crop in 2025.

Durian garden (Phuoc An hamlet, Phuoc Ninh commune, Duong Minh Chau district), has an area of 3 hectares, grows Ri6 variety, each crop reaches 20 tons/ha, at the beginning of the season the selling price fluctuates from 50,000 VND - 60,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Huynh Van Phong said: “The durian garden mainly uses organic fertilizers, limits the use of chemicals, and implements labor protection, recording full information in the cultivation diary... I have completed the application for registering the growing area code for the entire garden area so that the durian products meet the conditions and standards for export.

Hopefully, when developing growing area codes, durian will achieve productivity, quality, stable output, and official export will affirm the durian brand in the international market.

Mr. Phan Hoai Thinh - Director of Bau Don Fruit Tree Cooperative (Go Dau district) said that in the 2024-2025 durian crop year, in Bau Don commune, there are more than 900 hectares of fruit bearing fruit with an average yield of 15-20 tons/ha. Currently, the cooperative is jointly purchasing all durian from members that have been granted growing area codes, with an area of 120 hectares.

Mr. Thinh said that although Mr. Phong's durian garden has not yet been granted a growing area code, through sample testing, the durian product does not contain residues of yellow O and cadmium.

Through many sample tests, Mr. Phong's durians met the standards and quality, so the cooperative has signed a contract to purchase all products in the garden.

Currently, the durian export market is very difficult, requiring high quality durian products. Therefore, in order for durian to have a stable output, before cutting the fruit, it is mandatory to take samples to test for yellow O and Cadmium residues. If the durian meets the standards, the purchasing unit will proceed to cut the fruit. Each garden is assigned a separate code to protect the growing area code of each garden.

“Exporting durian products is a big playground, so tightening inspection from the source and making information transparent is also a way for durian products to go the long way. Changing farming habits and requiring inspection from the source of products not only protects the health of consumers and export markets but also protects the producers themselves,” Mr. Thinh emphasized.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Linh - Deputy Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection said that the province has been implementing the development of growing area codes for many years, especially when durian is exported to the Chinese market.

Currently, the Department continues to support gardeners in granting growing area codes for areas with export needs. There are 40 durian growing area codes in the area, of which 5 have been approved for export to the Chinese market, the remaining codes are still waiting for approval from China.

Mr. Ha Thanh Tung - Director of Tay Ninh Agricultural Extension Center said that currently, producers still have the habit of intensive farming and overusing pesticides. In 2025, the Center will focus on instructing producers to control pesticides on crops according to regulations, and promote and mobilize producers to handle pesticide packaging after use.

Participating in the development of growing area codes means that farmers must strictly comply with production requirements according to safety standards, from cultivation, care, harvesting, processing to transportation, distribution, etc. Changing production habits is difficult, but producers are still very dedicated and determined to implement it.

The Agricultural Extension Center continues to coordinate with agricultural experts to organize training courses according to each growth stage of the crop to implement and guide producers; strengthen the connection between management levels, enterprises, cooperatives and farmers to stabilize consumption sources and expand domestic and foreign markets; raise awareness of farmers, cooperatives and technical staff on safe and effective durian production.
