The United Nations Day of Vesak is a cultural activity of the United Nations. The 54th session of the United Nations General Assembly on December 15, 1999 decided that Vesak or the Three-Day Festival commemorating the birth, enlightenment and nirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni is a religious and cultural festival for peace .
Since 2000, the UN Vesak Festival has been held 19 times at the United Nations Headquarters and other countries around the world . During this period, Vietnam has successfully hosted and organized three UN Vesak Festivals in 2008 at the My Dinh National Convention Center, Hanoi, 2014 at Bai Dinh Pagoda, Ninh Binh Province and 2019 at Tam Chuc Pagoda, Ha Nam Province.
Hosting the UN Vesak Festival in 2025 will be an opportunity for international friends from all over the world to come to Ho Chi Minh City. This is also an opportunity to introduce the image of the country and people of Vietnam who love peace, friendliness, solidarity and harmony. The 2025 United Nations Vesak Festival will take place from May 6-8, 2025 at: Vietnam Buddhist Academy Hall, Le Minh Xuan Campus, Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City (Main venue for the opening, seminar and closing ceremonies); cultural festival events and the enshrinement of the Buddha Sakyamuni's relics, the national treasure of India, at Thanh Tam Pagoda (next to the Vietnam Buddhist Academy), Lang Le Park (next to the Academy), Le Minh Xuan Commune, Binh Chanh District; events to enshrine the heart relics of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc at Vietnam National Temple, 3/2 Street, District 10; international art exchange at Sala Theater, Dai Quang Minh Urban Area, Thu Duc City; visit Sun World Ba Den Mountain Cultural Tourism Area, Tay Ninh Province.
The 2025 United Nations Day of Vesak has the main theme "Solidarity and Tolerance for Human Dignity: Buddhist Insights for World Peace and Sustainable Development" and 5 sub-themes: Nurturing Inner Peace for World Peace; Forgiveness and Healing with Mindfulness: The Path of Reconciliation; Buddhist Compassion in Action: Shared Responsibility for Human Development; Mindfulness in Education for a Compassionate and Sustainable Future; Promoting Solidarity: Collaborative Efforts for Global Harmony.
The 2025 UN Vesak Festival is attended by heads of state, with an expected international delegation of about 1,200 delegates from 85 countries and territories and about 1,500 domestic delegates.
Within the framework of the activities of the 2025 UN Vesak Festival, from May 2-9, there will be activities: Buddhist cultural festival, Buddhist art performance, Buddhist cultural fair... Procession and enshrinement of the Buddha's relics, the national treasure of India, at Thanh Tam Pagoda, Lang Le Park and Vietnam Buddhist Academy; Opening ceremony of worshiping the Buddha's relics, the national treasure of India at Thanh Tam Pagoda, Binh Chanh District and the heart relics of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc at Vietnam National Temple, District 10; Opening of Buddhist cultural exhibition events at the Academy campus; May 6: Opening of the 2025 UN Vesak Festival; International Scientific Conference of the 2025 UN Vesak; Closing ceremony of the 2025 UN Vesak Festival...
At the same time, international art exchanges of countries participating in the Festival are expected to include: China, India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Korea, Vietnam... taking place at Sala Theater, Dai Quang Minh urban area, Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh City.
