Recently, the Andrology Center - Viet Duc Friendship Hospital has encountered many cases of people with female genitalia, registered at birth as female. However, during the development process, there were many abnormal signs, so they went to the doctor and discovered that their true gender was "male".

According to Associate Professor Nguyen Quang, President of the Vietnam Association of Gender Medicine and Director of the Andrology Center at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, many people are born with congenital defects that cause confusion about their gender at birth.

Congenital defects such as hypospadias, cryptorchidism, clitoral hypertrophy, and sexual development disorders are common conditions that cause gender confusion right after birth.

Many cases of children living with gender confusion for many years are only discovered and intervened when they begin to show psychological and physiological manifestations that are different from their physical gender.

"Not only that, there are some cases where gender is redefined after adulthood, causing great impact on life, work and family.

There have been cases where people went through puberty and had the same physical appearance as other women, but when they didn't have their period, they went to the doctor and discovered their true gender," Mr. Quang informed.

According to Mr. Quang, gender reassignment must be based on many medical criteria such as chromosomes, gonads, hormones, fertility, surgery, etc. In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to the psychology and awareness of the patient and parents.

Doctors also recommend that when children have doubts and feel different from their peers, parents should calmly listen and accompany them.

In case of suspected birth defect, the child should be taken to the hospital for examination.

Gender reassignment is a humane act, ensuring that each person can live true to their gender.
