Exploiting the strengths of alluvial land
On an area of over 2,500 m2 of alluvial land along the Lam River (in Hung Thanh Commune), there are rows of Peony and Black Summer grape varieties with heavy fruit, entering the exploitation period. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Son - Director of Phu Thinh Agricultural and Service Cooperative, previously, on this area, the cooperative grew 2 crops of melons and 1 crop of strawberries/year, combined with growing spiny cucumbers and vegetables according to VietGAP standards. The income from the model was quite good, about more than 500 million VND/year.
However, with the long-term orientation of an agricultural model combined with agricultural experience tourism to increase the value of agricultural products, in March 2023, the cooperative switched to growing grapes and initially assessed that the crop was very suitable for the climate, soil and the fruit quality was very good.

Mr. Nguyen Van Son also said that the advantage of grapevines is that they are strange, beautiful and clean, suitable for experiential activities. At the same time, the growth and harvest period lasts 15 - 20 years, each year giving several crops of fruit; the harvest period is also longer, meaning the experience period is longer than other crops.
To improve land use efficiency and agricultural production efficiency, Phu Thinh Agricultural and Service Cooperative combines high-tech agricultural production with agricultural experience tourism.

Also on the alluvial land, in Hung Linh commune, the high-tech agricultural model of Vfresh Garden High-tech Organic Agricultural Service Cooperative is to produce vegetables, tubers, fruits, and flowers in greenhouses and net houses.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dat - Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Vfresh Garden High-Tech Organic Agricultural Services Cooperative said: Currently, the total area of 1 hectare has 4 greenhouses and net houses; divided into 4 production areas, including 2 areas producing vegetables using Israeli technology, such as baby cucumbers, tomatoes, beef, cherries, bell peppers, broccoli; fish farming and hydroponic vegetable growing area according to the Aquaponics model; Taiwanese guava growing area with more than 300 trees.

The cooperative has applied technology to control the amount of irrigation water, fertilizer... through smartphones. And the future direction will focus on production according to the Aquaponics model, creating organic agricultural products whose consumption trend is increasing.
In Long Xa commune, the alluvial land of more than 6 hectares from corn, peanuts, beans, is now converted to grow Burdock ginseng and green squash, prickly cucumber, guava...; applying sprinkler irrigation technology of the branch of Thanh Vinh Cooperative for production, supply and consumption of clean agricultural products. Burdock ginseng alone is grown on about 2-3 hectares each crop, earning from 150 - 180 million VND/ha.
Deputy Head of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Ba Thi Dung said: The whole district has about 1,000 hectares of alluvial land along the Lam River, suitable for many types of crops, especially for developing high-tech agricultural models. Therefore, in recent years, the district has strengthened its direction to attract and create conditions for organizations and individuals to implement high-tech agricultural projects and models, and currently there are 3 models that have proven effective in Hung Thanh, Hung Linh, and Long Xa communes; both bringing high efficiency in agricultural production and contributing to changing people's thinking and awareness in agricultural production.

Along with that, the district focuses on directing localities with alluvial land to step up propaganda and mobilize people to apply science and technology to agricultural production; at the same time, invest in infrastructure, including roads, electricity lines and systems.
Currently, in some localities such as Chau Nhan, Hung Thanh, Long Xa, safe vegetable production areas have been formed, producing according to VietGAP standards, increasing the value of agricultural production. Attached to the advantage of Lam River alluvial land, agricultural production is continuing to be oriented by the district to build ecological agricultural models, experimental agricultural farming to develop tourism.
High-tech agricultural development
The area is located next to Vinh city, with VSIP Industrial Park located in the area and a large agricultural land fund, with more than 10,000 hectares; these are favorable conditions for Hung Nguyen district to develop commodity agriculture.
However, to meet the increasingly demanding market demand for high quality agricultural products, the problem is to promote the application of high technology. Therefore, entering the 2020 - 2025 term, the District People's Committee issued a Project on applying high technology in agricultural production in the district, period 2021 - 2025.

The issuance of the project, according to Mr. Le Pham Hung - Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee, Chairman of the District People's Committee, creates a foundation and high political determination in the entire political system from the district to the grassroots level for the goal of creating a breakthrough in agricultural production, creating a premise for building sustainable organic agricultural production in the fields of cultivation, livestock and aquaculture, to promote large-scale commodity production, high productivity, quality, efficiency, environmental friendliness, creating high competitiveness in the market.
The issuance of the Project on applying high technology in agricultural production aims to create unity and high political determination of the entire political system to create a breakthrough in agricultural production, creating a premise for building sustainable organic agricultural production in Hung Nguyen district.
Mr. Le Pham Hung - Deputy Secretary of District Party Committee, Chairman of District People's Committee
At the same time, this is also the basis for the district to have a support mechanism to introduce new high-value varieties into production; build net houses, membrane houses, misting, drip irrigation, seepage irrigation systems, refrigeration and cooling systems to preserve products; including investment in traffic infrastructure, irrigation, electricity systems... with a total budget supported in one and a half years of implementation of more than 1.2 billion VND for localities, supporting 50% of varieties and materials to build a model of producing new high-value varieties.
After more than a year and a half of implementing the project, localities have focused on planning and implementation, forming a number of production areas applying high-tech agriculture in all fields of cultivation, livestock, aquaculture, and key commodity production areas.
Specifically, the district has built a number of vegetable, root and fruit production areas following VietGAP standards, applying sprinkler irrigation systems in the communes of Hung Thanh, Long Xa, Xuan Lam, Hung Tan. In the area, 4 greenhouses and net houses have been built in the 4 communes of Hung Linh, Hung Thanh, Hung My, Hung Thong.
The district has also directed the successful construction of a model linking Atlantic potato production with product consumption, with more than 10 hectares in Xuan Lam commune and is continuing to expand the area in the next production season. In the district, an effective medicinal plant production area has been formed in the Lam River alluvial area; an agricultural model associated with eco-tourism and farming experience in Hung Thanh commune.

For rice, the district continues to direct the introduction of new high-quality rice varieties into production, with key varieties such as Bac Thinh, VNR20, CNC11, Huong Thanh 8, HD11, DH12, accounting for 60-70% of the rice variety structure produced in the whole district; linking the construction of 25 large fields for commercial rice production/crop. In the livestock sector, the trend of small-scale livestock farming has decreased and the model of high-tech farm farming has increased.
Like the farm of Mr. Le Quoc Tan's family in Hung Nghia commune, with a closed barn system, cooling system, automatic temperature control, feeding and drinking troughs; scale of 200 sows, 400 pigs/litter and 5 hectares of fish ponds, annual revenue of more than 4 billion VND.
Or the model of applying technology to raise ducks on land of Mr. Hoang Xuan Nam's family in Hung Dao commune, with a scale of 3,500 ducks/batch, earning a profit of 150-180 million VND per year.
Applying artificial insemination technology to implement the Zebu program, inseminate high-yield cow semen; up to now, the rate of sind cattle accounts for over 70% of the total herd. In the field of aquaculture production, an intensive aquaculture area has been built with the application of new technology in the communes of Hung Loi, Hung Nghia, Hung Tan, Hung Dao and Hung Nguyen town.

Although the district has focused on promoting the application of science and technology in agricultural production, many advanced technologies as well as new farming processes have not been widely applied in production; large-scale high-tech agricultural production areas have not been formed; there is no connection between cooperatives, farms and large enterprises; and a sustainable production and product consumption chain for farmers has not been formed.
These are the limitations and difficulties that the Party Committee and the government of Hung Nguyen district are frankly acknowledging in order to continue to consider and propose more drastic solutions to promote agricultural production in the area with high efficiency in the coming time.
